Publisher's Summary

Canada, 1860: While on a mission for Black, Elbert notices the lovely Anna Baker for the first time. Unable to think of much else, he leaves Canada to pursue the beauty who has captured his thoughts.

Anna is unnerved by the man with the lifeless eyes, who is relentless and forward in his approach. She offers nothing of herself to the intimidating stranger, but fate has a different plan.

When Anna is assaulted by slave catchers on the streets of Boston, Elbert finds his manhood tested to the limit. He steps in to help, but the consequences prove devastating, and both are sold into bondage. As Anna learns the horrors of slavery, she comes to understand there is more to the foreboding stranger than meets the eye.

Elbert and Anna manage to escape - with the help of the legendary Black. But freedom is not enough to satisfy Elbert’s bruised ego. He wants the pound of flesh owed, and he will stop at nothing to collect.

The Uncaged Mind is a passionate story of love and healing despite the ugly backdrop of slavery.

Native New Yorker Joan Vassar is an avid storyteller who enjoys weaving a great tale.

I'm Really Enjoying This Series

What an amazing story....Ordinarily, I'm not interested in historical fiction; however, this story was so engaging and the to missions to save and free slaves was extremely captivating for me. The character development was amazing The author did a wonderful job allowing us to experience the raw emotions of both the male and female characters in the story. Elbert was this big strong imposing alpha male, yet we were able to witness his vulnerability....and his love for his wife was beautiful. I didn't want this story to end. I'm so excited to read the next installment about James. OUTSTANDING Narration from Jakobi Diem.

worthwhile

the author nailed this one. Jakobi as always killed the narration. I hope there is a third one because there still is one more problem that need to be handled. Good listen overall.

Phenomenal

This is one of thee BEST realistic historical romance series to which I have listened. The characters are very flawed but so lifelike. I’ll be awaiting James’s story on Audible because once I experience a book a particular way, I want to experience the series as a whole the same way. I am absolutely blown away by Ms. Vassar and her storytelling abilities. I HIGHLY recommend this installment as well as “Black” book 1 of this series. I also recommend reading them in order so the reader gets all the feels & get to know the whole family. BRAVA!! BRAVA!!

Excellent

This series OMG! Joan is magnificent. Who would have thought they'll be able to imagine themselves in the stories, me that who. Elbert is the definition of protector of mind, body, and spirit. This man loved Anna in a way you could do nothing but submit. I can't wait for James story to be an audible release. Joan did this!!!

Beautiful Story

Excellent writing, beautiful and gritty story. I never thought I'd enjoy a romance set during slavery times. Joan Vassar is so talented. Black, Elbert, and James are such virile men who are sensitive and fearless. I cant wait to continue the series!!

Amazing!

This series is amazing and this story is another added gem with so much rich history and many mind-blowing nuances that will have you wide-eyed and totally invested in the mission. Jakobi Diem is other worldly! I simply cannot get enough of him and that voice! Such an amazing talent.

Loved Loved Loved!

This book was good from start to finish 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾Joan Vassar is an amazing author. I never thought I would like a book from the slavery era but here I am hooked! I absolutely love this series and once again Jakobi Diem Jakobi Diem Jakobi Diem 🙌🏾 this man brought every character to life without jakobi's book 1 narration I would not have discovered through book 2 1 of my now favorite authors Joan Vassar. Now on to James I will read the book in jakobi's voice until we are blessed with the audible book 🤗

ELBERT + JAKOBI = Change of panties needed!

Whew... Elbert was... EVERYTHING! Me personally, I love a man with a tutored soul, but also has a great heart. And the way Jakobi was narrating... good lord... change of panties were surely needed!!! I'm so sad that James isn't on Audible yet, but I'm about to go read about him, because I can't wait!
