Publisher's Summary

Canada, 1860: While on a mission for Black, Elbert notices the lovely Anna Baker for the first time. Unable to think of much else, he leaves Canada to pursue the beauty who has captured his thoughts.

Anna is unnerved by the man with the lifeless eyes, who is relentless and forward in his approach. She offers nothing of herself to the intimidating stranger, but fate has a different plan.

When Anna is assaulted by slave catchers on the streets of Boston, Elbert finds his manhood tested to the limit. He steps in to help, but the consequences prove devastating, and both are sold into bondage. As Anna learns the horrors of slavery, she comes to understand there is more to the foreboding stranger than meets the eye.

Elbert and Anna manage to escape - with the help of the legendary Black. But freedom is not enough to satisfy Elbert’s bruised ego. He wants the pound of flesh owed, and he will stop at nothing to collect.

The Uncaged Mind is a passionate story of love and healing despite the ugly backdrop of slavery.

Native New Yorker Joan Vassar is an avid storyteller who enjoys weaving a great tale.

I'm Really Enjoying This Series

What an amazing story....Ordinarily, I'm not interested in historical fiction; however, this story was so engaging and the to missions to save and free slaves was extremely captivating for me. The character development was amazing The author did a wonderful job allowing us to experience the raw emotions of both the male and female characters in the story. Elbert was this big strong imposing alpha male, yet we were able to witness his vulnerability....and his love for his wife was beautiful. I didn't want this story to end. I'm so excited to read the next installment about James. OUTSTANDING Narration from Jakobi Diem.

Black Excellence!!

Elbert was a baaadddd mf! He is definitely my historical fiction bae. Like “Black”, “Elbert the Uncaged Mind”, was a piece of black excellence. @joan.vassar Joan Vassar’s writing style is phenomenal. Her use of imagery and attention to details, allows you to live through the storyline along with the characters. Elbert had heck of a start. It started off with him trying to get to know a young lady named Anna in a town in Boston. While taking a walk with her, suddenly a group of men attacked and attempted to take Anna, while Elbert tried his hardest to fight the men off. He and Anna were both taken and held in captivity, until Black and his men found and rescued them. After his rescue Elbert was so mentally broken. He thought himself as a free man all this time until his freedom was taken from him like it was nothing. He was angry, revengeful, and embarrassed. Anna immediately took comfort and strength in being around Elbert. She feared him but yet felt safe. Elbert had a internal battle with himself about his strength and capabilities to protect Anna when he felt like he failed her once. This story was an adventure! Elbert and Anna’s relationship was 🔥🔥🔥. Elbert in my opinion represented the more aggressive side of the African American male. He had a chip on his shoulder, with so much to prove to himself and those around him. Again, listen to the Audible! Jakobi Diem @jakobidiem did his thang once again! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Greatness

It is rare to read a book and know, without question, that the ancestors are pleased with this work. What Ms. Vassar and Mr. Diem were able to create here is magic. Blessings to you both.

Uncaged my view of historical fiction!

This Black Series is everything. 💜Joan Vassar is an amazingly gifted story teller. 🙌🏽 The historical context, the details, character descriptions and characteristics and the storyline captures your imagination, heart, and soul. 👏🏽

Elbert big, bold, and lethal...wrestling with guilt and brokenness but finds his way to his heart 💜 A woman who shows him that he is worthy of love. Anna and Elbert did not disappoint with their harrowing escape from danger and death...(spoiler) neither would have survived being captured.

Black and his men continue their crusade to freedom and prosperity and offering it to anyone willing to board the Underground Railroad 🛤

Jakobi Diem’s stellar performance is the icing on the cake for this delicious recipe of life on the Frontier.

My rating: 🔥⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥

worthwhile

the author nailed this one. Jakobi as always killed the narration. I hope there is a third one because there still is one more problem that need to be handled. Good listen overall.

I can't say enough about this book...

Book 2, we follow Elbert and from the beginning, I was sucked in and couldn't put it down. Elbert was snatched and sold back into slavery along with the woman he was following. Just before Elbert was about to give up, his brothers came for him. Returning back to Canada, Elbert and his brothers decided to ride out to save stolen slaves. Anna was saved by Elbert, but what she got so much more. Anna and Elbert were so beautiful together and I loved every scene with them. This story had me laughing, happy, sad and scared. Jakobi did an damn good job narrating the story along with the many voices. I was sad when this story ended!!

Let’s Set the Mood Right Quick:

Elbert: The Uncaged Mind by Joan Vassar

Drink: Ditch the B*tch

Music: Nothing But You by Conor Maynard, Venom (Official Audio) by Eminem

Audible: Jakobi Diem: Jakobi brought forth an intimacy in this story. He once again performed as he brought the vulnerability to these characters while also showing their incredible strength. He has done a wonderful job capturing the tone of Elbert’s whole story. He will not disappoint. The audible is a must.

Elbert: If, “you got the right one,” was a person it would be Elbert. He embodies a man of his time. He understood the importance of his woman feeling safe and protected.

Anna: If, “quiet strength,” was a person it would be Anna. She was a true lady and beautiful both inside and out. She showed such resilience in this story, and she did it with grace and class.

The Twelve: If, “gang gang gang,” was a group it would be The Twelve. They were not only organized but they never let egos get in the way of the mission. They are the very definition of attitude reflecting leadership.

Tim: If, “down for the cause,” was a person it would be Tim. From the beginning Tim showed that he was a rider. He has no problem putting his life on the line to protect and guard the Fort and all that it stands for.

Shultz: If, “I’m your man,” was a person it would be Shultz. The good doctor showed he was not afraid to get his hands dirty. He willingly and happily goes wherever he is needed.

Elbert’s story was far more sensual and romantic than I thought it was going to be. Elbert started off hitting right away. Ms. Joan Vassar is the undisputed, “Queen of Prologues.” The prologue truly set the mood for this whole story. Once again, I was amazed by the complexity of the story and characters. This historical fiction was so gritty and hard, while also being sweet, loving, and patient. This story shows the beauty of love and what a man will do for the woman in his life while feeding his ego once it’s been bruised. The second book in the Black Series is an amazing must read. Trust this is not a series you’re going to want to miss.
