Publisher's Summary

It is popularly supposed that a greater prosperity for individuals or nations can only come through a political and social reconstruction. This cannot be true apart from the practice of the moral virtues in the individuals that comprise a nation. Better laws and social conditions will always follow a higher realization of morality among the individuals of a community, but no legal enactment can give prosperity to, nay it cannot prevent the ruin of, a man or a nation that has become lax and decadent in the pursuit and practice of virtue. The moral virtues are the foundation and support of prosperity as they are the soul of greatness. They endure forever, and all the works of man which endure are built upon them. Without them there is neither strength, stability, nor substantial reality, but only ephemeral dreams. To find moral principles is to have found prosperity, greatness, truth, and is therefore to be strong, valiant, joyful and free.-James Allen Bryngoleu, Ilfracombe, England

The Power of Right Thought

James Allen is one of the main Pillar of the self help movement, Read or listen to his works and you will not have to read any other spin offs. The book is full of basic truth and deep understanding of prosperity. All under the same basic principle of his works that "a man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts."

Favorite for centuries!

James Allan is my favorite author! Narrators play a significant role in if an audiobook is well received, Sean Pratt is an excellent reader who downflects his words as necessary to convey Allan’s message appropriately!

Obvious Advice and Unsubstantiated Claims

I struggled to get through this book. I liked the initial message that in the long run, only people who act morally come out ahead, but unfortunately the claim was unsubstantiated. Allen did not provide evidence or even examples to support his claim; it is just so b/c he confidently claims it is.

Secondly, his eight pillars and what I will call his "sub-pillars" all seemed very obvious (stuff like work hard, show integrity, don't sleep too little or too much). They are all things that most people already know, so unless they are packaged in a new, interesting or enlightening way, they don't really resonate (I guess I shouldn't have expected new and interesting from someone who died in 1912).

On a positive front, you can't go wrong with the message. The book can probably serve as a nice back to basics refresher for some, much like an offsite retreat. While not enlightening, the advice is practical. Children are rarely "enlightened" by what their parents say, but that doesn't mean the counsel isn't sensible. The question becomes whether the guidance is worth 3 hours of your time. For me, an avid listeing of self-improvement books, it wasn't. I like to bookmark, take notes and summarize interesting ideas from books and here, I didn't feel compelled to bookmark anything.

great book moral book

the author does a great job connecting moral virtue to success. Not just success in fincial terms, but from a point of inner success that will lead to the more worldly things in life.
