Publisher's Summary

Eagle Voice Remembers is John Neihardt's mature and reflective interpretation of the old Sioux way of life. He served as a translator of the Sioux past, whose audience has proved not to be limited by space or time. Through his writings, Black Elk, Eagle Elk, and other old men who were of that last generation of Sioux to have participated in the old buffalo-hunting life and the disorienting period of strife with the U.S. Army found a literary voice. What they said chronicles a dramatic transition in the life of the Plains Indians; the record of their thoughts, interpreted by Neihardt, is a legacy preserved for the future. It transcends the specifics of this one tragic case of cultural misunderstanding and conflict and speaks to universal human concerns. It is a story worth contemplating both for itself and for the lessons it teaches all humanity.

A must listen!

This is an extremely compelling story of how life was before colonization. Through the lens of someone who actually lived it, as opposed to a colonizer's historical account. There were a few unedited mistakes in the narration, but as annoying as it was at times, I wouldn't trade it for anyone else. The distinctively Native voice brought a lot of character and authenticity to the story.

I didn't realize it was fiction

They are fascinating stories, but would have been better if it was an actual life narrative.

Fascinating!

I loved this book. What marred it is that reading errors and retakes have not been edited out. Quite annoying.

Crushingly powerful

This moved me much more than Black Elk Speaks. This is sadly unknown and underrated.

Good book

I wish Neihardt had written a thousand more of these accounts. Really, I wish he didn't have to.

heart breaking

this reading has a few production issues and mispronounced Lakota words, otherwise a great historical story.
