The continued story of Cassy and "the clan"

Continuing the story of Cassy and her clan, EMP Deadfall takes place at the oasis that was Cassy's prepper compound. Unfortunately, there are still people out there who want to see her and everyone that she's helped dead.

EMP Deadfall was narrated by Kevin Pierce who has narrated the rest of the series. He does a perfect job, as always with this. The production quality and storytelling by Pierce made this story even better than it already was.

There was nothing wrong with book 3, it had a lot of great story in it and even more action, but it really feels like it is being drawn out now. I know that trilogies are the new thing and writing at least three books is becoming the norm. But not all stories need three books to tell. Like I said, I still enjoyed this book a lot.

Cassy has grown on me with each book, and she has really has proven to be a great leader for the clan. Her character has easily had one of the longest arc's in the whole series. She's grown, changed, and learned throughout each one. Each book leaving her a slightly different person and character. It's really awesome that Foster and Holden can write such a dynamic character that is able to adapt and grow like that.

Overall, EMP Deadfall had a lot of elements I really enjoyed, and a few things that felt like they were re-used from the other books. The re-use and extended shelf-life of this book only knock it down .5 in my rating because I still really enjoyed it!

Didn't want it to end. written by someone who appreciates the struggles of war and survival.

Too many irons in the fire.

Cassy and crew, now known as the Clan, have safely made the journey to her farm or homestead or compound depending how you look at it. She IS a prepper you know, and the farm is stocked with all the goodies any prepper worth their salt would have laid in. Our nemesis in hiding, Peter, has returned to his community to take charge, rally the troops against Cassy, and march on the Clan to relieve them of all their possessions and their lives. The invaders, believed to be North Koreans & Middle East, continue with their push inland. How this part of the plot will wind up is a mystery to me at this time. The other mysterious player called the 20s occasionally adds their two cents to the game with an eye towards disrupting the invaders, but this has yet to be exposed. Too many irons in the fire. I doubt if it’s possible to resolve all these issues by the end of this book. Looks like book four will be required. What about the Army, what are they doing? Evidently General Adam Hole has his work cut out for him. General A. Hole ha-ha! J.J. Holden must have thrown that in there for a laugh. Worked for me! Cassy and Clan continue to remake her farm into a community with rules based on fairness and justice.

Good listen

The story had some interesting and original ideas. I liked the way his characters evolved over time. Hope to hear more about Jazzy in the next book.

As most people know Kevin Pierce does a lot of EMP / survival / preeper readings. As always, he does a very good. Main reason that I purchased the first three books.

As for the story, it has a lot of the elements most of these survival disaster stories, dis-trust of the government, only the prepared will survive, and a total lost of all civility. It reads like a preeper infomercial. The characters are not very good. They try to make things very simple black and white. These guys are just evil, the other guys are all good. Too simple of a plot to keep my attention. Just because there has been a disaster, does not mean all the books are burned and we go back to zero. Do we forget all of science and technology or forget how to read, WTF? It is also covertly racist in several ways in how it refers to certain characters. A lot of survival stories have these ideas like gangs will run the cities with racially stereotypes running the gangs. A lot of ppl in America have weapons, and most are not in gangs. There is no gang that can take a city over even after a disaster. They don’t have the size, numbers or organization to do something like that, it’s just a fear tactic used by racist. Even the way he talks about the Korea characters is ignorant and a stereotype. This series is not worth continuing. Even the preview of the next books or going into hard core government takes over paranoia. These types of stories need to evolve and get some real creativity, still have not found that yet. Sometimes I think that these disaster books are more like wish books so people that think like the author can role the clock back to a time where they feel more empowered.

Best so far if the series. I was on the fence whether to continue listening to this particular series. I'm pleased I did. Each book is better than the last.

I'm not sure if I get how you did time-line in this book. Seems kinda weird that a wife and child get over the death of dad after a couple of days. Also, it's weird how the world resulted in cannibalism within a month

Missing Substance

This is a good series. It's not that it's not. The one thing that's missing is a character that the reader can truly identify with and root for. Honestly, save one or two, few if any of the characters are savory. Mandy is one character that is truly a moral voice of reason. One character that surprised in this one was Jazz. She really grows on the reader, and becomes one who rises up instead of sinks to new lows of depravity. It's the clan verses Peter's twisted group of animals.

That's another thing, this series started with Cassy being raped (attempted rape) by Jim, who just so happens to be in Peter's group. It felt unnecessary and more gratuitous. That hasn't changed as the series went on. We all know that with appalling conditions, people act more depraved. But Jim is particularly disgusting, a serial predator. And then there's the invasion of troops from North Korea and Arabic countries. So it gets confusing as to what's going on and who's involved. There's a lot going on and it's hard to keep up. Here's to hoping it gets better with the next book.

The reason to listen is Kevin Pierce. He's the reason you stay with it. Had anyone else been narrating, it would be too easy just to turn it off because he makes it worth it. He always does. This series is proof that less is more, and not the other way around.
