Publisher's summary

Dylan sat gazing out of his classroom window, waiting for the bell to ring. He was watching seahorses playing in the reeds of sea kelp swaying in the gentle current…and not paying any attention at all to the math lesson that was continuing outside of his daydream.

“Pssst … psst,” Dylan heard behind him. Murdoch passed a note forward. Dylan quickly grabbed it and opened it under his desk without Mrs Pike-Teeth seeing it. It read, "Happy birthday Bubble Boy!”

Dylan McFinn is an ordinary 12-year-old. Ordinary, that is, if you ignore the fact that he lives deep under the Pacific Ocean with his family, The McFinn’s. As he battles monsters and maelstroms on his first day as a teenager, Dylan discovers that he can be an awful lot more than he imagines and a nostalgic trip to the past was more than just a rite of passage. It was a passage to his destiny.

Sea Serpents, Mermaids, and More!

The McFinn family is unique in many ways. Dylan and his brother attend school but it is Dylan who is specifically and frequently bullied. On the day of becoming thirteen, Dylan is thrust into an adventure that pits him against the sea and human monsters, and more. A coming-of-age book that allows him to experience adventure with his father and brother. Little does he know that this adventure will mold who he is to become.

The author, Liam Jenkins, weaves into the story a concern for the environment and the life-changing decisions that are made in one’s move toward adulthood. He skillfully ties the two themes together into a smoothly flowing-storyline. He accurately captured the interaction between brothers through dialogue and vivid imagery. The plot twists were well executed and thought out. Never a dull moment, the story flowed quickly and with ease.

The narrator, Talisker Little captured each character’s personality and projected them with ease. His ability to switch between the different characters was done smoothly and flawlessly. His skills at timing and intonation were masterful. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to his performance.

Overall, this is one of those action/adventure books that you want to hear in one sitting. Wonderful for all ages, as the messages Jenkins weaves are impressively presented. Skillfully intertwined are messages of taking care of the land and sea as well as maturity and goodness. I look forward to hearing more from Liam Jenkins and Talisker Little!
