Publisher's Summary

Reese Duncan wanted a wife, pure and simple. Someone to have children with, someone to help him rebuild his ranch, someone uncomplicated...and someone very different from his first wife, the woman who'd destroyed his life. But he hadn't bargained on Madelyn Patterson. She was sophisticated and citified, and she was willing to herd cattle, keep house and start a family with Reese. The only thing she asked for in return was love - the one thing Reese refused to guarantee.

Enjoyed!

I liked the setting and the story, Madelyn really puts herself out there. And I love that she doesn’t back down oh no she doesn’t she is just as strong-willed as Reese is.

This was a unique story for me I haven’t read many books where it’s almost an arranged marriage and they have to get to know each other after the wedding. The ones I have read I loved because it for me at least adds an extra element to the story.

Great narration! I really liked the character voices.

Wanted: Wife....5 STAR fun~~~~

Plot: divorced and very bitter rancher Reese~ takes out an ADD for a wife.

Reese Duncan has a run down ranch and lots of debt from his divorce from ex wife April. He wants children and needs a "wife" so he takes out an ADD in the paper. Socialite Madelyn Patterson has looks and money~ but spots the ADD. She replies to the wife wanted ADD. This is fun from the beginning. Reese sends her a bus ticket and she arrives in a plane. He lays out his rules from the beginning. He is bitter and distrustful of women...all women. Maddy and Reese find their marriage is full of passion. Reese wants to make all the 'rules' in the marriage. Maddy and Reese work the run down ranch and plan for the baby they both want. When Maddy pays off the ranch debt Reese is livid. This is a form of betrayal in Reese's eyes...... She is not following his 'plans' and he takes it out on her. Pregnant Maddy decides she has taken enough "crap" from Reese and packs her bags and moves out. But moves down the road to "Flora's Café" and is hired as a waitress. How DARE she move out and take "his baby" ....away from the ranch? The fun begins when dominate male/husband Reese arrives to "drag" the unwilling bride home. LOL. When a LOUD NO ....has Reese stomping out of the diner. Reese has to "court' his own wife with an audience of customers and Flora. You will laugh out loud at this. And Maddy finds she can teach an old dog/husband a few new tricks. This is an excellent audiobook. Lesa Lockford is good reader. This story moves along and keeps us interested. The passion is HOT. The road to happiness for Reese has plenty of pot holes....but the ending is fun and worth it. I give the 5 STARS~ Lockford continues to improve her skills with each new book. This is one of the BEST of the early Linda Howard books. Look for another....excellent Linda Howard early gem....HEARTBREAKER in October by Dreamscape media and audible.

Love these mail order bride stories

Any additional comments?

Reece Duncan wants a wife to help run his ranch and give him children, so he advertises for one. He doesn't want love, just a worker. and children. Madelyn works back east and is bored with her job working for her wealthy brother. Madelyn also has money, but not as much as her brother. Reece, on the other hand is broke. At first Reece rejects Madelyn because she is too pretty, hot, and stylish. Even though he is strongly attracted to her Reece doesn't think she would be a good worker. The other applicants are definitely not suitable so he goes back and considers Madelyn again. She found him to be extremely hot when she first met him and decides to accept Reece's proposal.

They are really hot together and things are going well until Madelyn does something that Reece cannot accept, so he becomes very cruel to her. What Madelyn did was NOT horrible and was done out of love. I had a hard time forgiving Reece for the way he reacted. Madelyn gets even in a very satisfying manner in her campaign to get even with Reece, and also to win his love.

After I finally forgave Reece, I enjoyed the book. Mainly because I loved Madelyn. The reader was fantastic.

A sweet read.

This is the first time I've listened to a Linda Howard book instead of reading and I found it a bit wish washy compared to her other books. It may be because of the narrator though. Still, a sweet story.

Linda Howard Classic!!! One Of My Favorites.

What did you love best about Duncan's Bride?

I have always loved a story with a strong man and a stronger woman. Madeline was a loving wife but not Reece's doormat .

What other book might you compare Duncan's Bride to and why?

Sarah's Child

Which character – as performed by Lesa Lockford – was your favorite?

Madeline's character was my favorite. She portrayed her just as I had always thought of her from the original book which I read many years ago.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction. It was like getting to visit an old friend in a new way. Loved this book in audio.

Any additional comments?

The narrator was well chosen. I enjoyed this audio very much.

One fine strong heroine!

I didn't plan to like an 'arranged marriage' type story but I ended up loving it. I started it while cleaning thinking I could turn it off and find something else if it was as boring as I expected it to be. Soon, I was paying attention to every word and truly enjoyed all the rich details of ranch life and these two strong willed characters. Madelyn and Duncan have quite a story and I would recommend this book.

Writing/Narration was good.. Hero.. not so much.

Duncan's Bride by Linda Howard (Audio Edition)
Narrated by Lesa Lockford
Series: Patterson-Cannon Family #1

♥ ♥ ♥ I bumped this book up to 3 stars, due to the writing and narration as these were both well done. However, I just could not abide the hero. He was such a jealous stubborn jerk! The way he treated Maddie, and the things he said to her were terrible and uncalled for. Maybe I am jaded, but I don’t see this kind of person changing their ways, and I would not enjoy being in this kind of relationship, so I can’t understand why the heroine would want to.

Personally I think a man can still be “Alpha” and be able to treat people with respect. To give Maddie some credit, she didn’t take Reece’s crap.. Which was good. She stood her ground and made choices for herself. I did think she fell in love a bit too fast.. But hey.. ya never know right?

If you are looking for a story, where the hero has trouble getting over his past, and realizing his future… this may be a great story for you.

Lesa Lockford did a great job with her narration. She had a very calm relaxing attitude for Maddie's character which I thought fit well and her gruff, no nonsense voice worked perfectly for Reece.

I finished it but not my favorite.

Not my favorite but I was intrigued by the story line. Wondered how the author was going to work it out. In the end rather slow and repetitive.

pretty good

pretty good if you can suspend belief a while. I mean what rich beautiful woman would willingly marry a man like that for nothing at all? I kept thinking, what is she getting out of the deal to do this to herself? Supposedly it is because she fell head over heels for the neanderthal at first sight. I think the story would have been more believable if it had been set in an earlier time period, like the 1800s. Today's woman would not be told when and where she can go. No man would tell her to stay home, clean, have babies and dinner better be on the table when the husband gets home and swoon because he's just so darn dreamy...no man is that dreamy to put up with that.
