Publisher's Summary

Drake Morgan, MD, neurosurgeon, bass player, philanthropist - Dominant. He doesn't do girlfriends, he doesn’t do sleepovers, and he certainly doesn't do breakfast in bed the morning after. He has his surgical slate at New York Presbyterian, he has a charitable foundation providing surgical tools to hospitals in Africa, he has his Brit Invasion cover band, Mersey, and he has his secret life as a Dominant in Manhattan's BDSM community.

Into bondage, D/s and the occasional dungeon scene, Drake keeps every part of his life separate, the divisions between them neat and tidy. His weeks are filled with surgeries, music, and D/s sex, and none of the well-planned and scheduled parts of his life intersect. That is until Kate McDermott crosses his path and screws everything up. Now, nothing is neat and tidy anymore, for Drake is smitten, and things are going to get messy....

A long and boring listen

Unfortunately this book falls flat. It is much too long; it should be more like 7 hours, not the 15 hours. It is very slow paced and rather boring. Drake’s approach to D/S is explained in his mind over and over in slow boring detail. Very little actually happens.

Kate was very wimpy and unappealing. Kate was just insincere in her interest, and Drake did not push in a dominant manner. Drake prefers to introduce newbies to the lifestyle, but should he have to beg them to be interested?

The narration is good.

Doctor by day Dom by night

He’s an older, regimented, successful, conservative Dom and She’s a smart, artistic, curious and forbidden.

The perspective of a middle aged, bass playing, Republican Neurosurgeon while not relatable to was an interesting perspective to experience. I just realized there is a companion series from Kate’s perspective that I would definitely be interested in checking out.

The narrator has just the right amount of bass in his voice to keep you listening all night.

Just like with every BDSM book you have to make the FSOG comparisons. But in this book there are several references to FSOG so don’t feel guilty for letting your mind go there. Like it’s a book they all read and brought new interest to the lifestyle which is found super relatable. I feel like this may go a little further into actual BDSM than 50. Also there is a Domme in this book that I find very interesting and would love to read more from her.

Sexy BDSM

I like this narrator and much of this story was HOT. The heroine is young, shy, and innocent and goes to full on BDSM pretty quick, though. And the shy innocent woman type is an annoying story for me. Having said that, I did enjoy the story and enjoyed the audible book. I got this as an audible book freebee from the narrator and this is a real review.

I LIKED IT!

I liked it! The narration was good. It will keep you entertained. This book reminded me of 50 Shades. The author does a good job with the character builds and plot. This story is told from Drake's POV. I look forward to reading The Agreement to get Kate's POV. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A bit long

This audio book was narrated exceptionally well by Jack Calihan. I have read other S.E. Lund novels and enjoyed them. The story for this novel is good. The characters are believable. Listening to it was a bit of a challenge at times due to the repetitive nature of the dialogue. It seems like Drake repeats himself every other chapter at a minimum. I am not sure if that would be less bothersome in print but it began to feel a bit like listening to a lecture or broken record after about the third time things were said. I am however interested enough that I am going to listen to the next book in the series. Jack Calihan is so easy to listen to that I am willing to make the stretch and see if the issue is eliminated in book 2.

Slow burn, but worth the sting

I enjoyed the story but found it to be a long slow burn. Picked up speed then slowed back down again. Enjoyable and the narrator was good.

Dom mets unexpected sub!

I received this Audible book and wrote this unbiased review. Drake is a trained dom who doesn't get emotionally involved with his subs. I loved how he relaxes(much to his dismay) his firm dom standards when he meets Kate. Kate is new to the sub world. The author has created great character development. Both of these characters will go through some major changes in their lives. This story is told from Drake's POV so the reader gets great insight into Drake's inner thoughts. Kate and Drake will have to face major obstacles in order to be together.I really enjoyed this story. Now add a fantastic narrator and this is an Audible book well worth listening to and enjoying. Jack Calihan's deep sexy voice is the perfect dom voice. He also creates distinctive voices for all of the characters. He brings out the emotions of the characters and makes the listeners feel that they are a part of the story.

Kate and Drake

This story is like BDSM for beginners. It has a lot of detailed instruction and explanation. It has great story potential if you stay the course. I believe this could have been half as long and maybe a bit mire chemistry. The narration was really good!

great characters and storyline

Several reviewers likened this to a copycat of FSOG, but I vehemently disagree. I have read the books and watched the movie cd of FSOG and their commonality is a light BDSM element focused on pleasure . I found this to be a sweet beautiful adventure where 2 people chose a power exchange to show their love. I found it exhilarating and refreshing. Ethan was a supportive understanding character for both Drake and Kate. Bully friend- zero; Kate and Drake everything. yay. The narrator's voice and expressions brought the story to life.

Extremely disappointed

I shouldn't have expected a good story, but for some reason I did. It's obvious the author doesn't understand BDSM, except for perhaps reading other books that have it wrong.

For an 'in control' dom, Drake gives in far too easily. His subs top from the bottom and he gives in. As a matter of terms: B&D is technically bondage and discipline, NOT bondage and dominance (though I can tell where the author got the mistaken wording). Rape play is non-con, not mock rape, though that fits... it's not the right term.

Drake comes across as a wimp, not a dom.

The only good thing was the narrator. Calihan has a nice voice that took on dominance... it wasn't his fault that the character was a wuss.

This book is not worth it. Find a better one.

Promising but long start to trilogy

This is the first book of S.E.Lund’s that I have read or listened so this telling from Drake’s point of view was all new to me. I must admit I found the story needed editing as there didn’t feel like 15 hours of substance, too much repetition and the story continues in 2 more books. That being said I thought Jack Calihan did a good job with the narration and bringing the characters to life. I received this audio via Audiobook Obsession.

Drake... I did NOT like him much till late in the book!

I almost didn’t finish the book because Drake made me so angry!!! Not really.... he just ticked me off..... a lot!

Katherine is smart and funny and submissive and should per perfect for his life. But he won’t let her in. He is very much a jerk with her.

I enjoyed everything about this book, but I yelled at Drake several times!!!

It is worth the listen!! Maybe because Katherine stands up and says she deserves more or maybe he gets his head out of his butt... you’ll have to listen to find out!!

Jack Calihan does s great job on this! He’s very pleasant to listen to!!

From Drakes POV

I enjoyed this series very much. I loved that this story was told only in Drakes POV. When I read the other books, I always wanted to get inside of his mind. He is a little arrogant, but what high paid talented doctor is not. This is amazing add to the series. You don’t want to miss out. As always enjoy Jack Calihan’s voice and the way he can preform.

Great Audible Listen🎧 💖Drake Morgan, MD💖

This book mirrors S.E. Lund’s “The Agreement” in her “Unrestrained Series”, it is told in Drake’s POV with new material, Drake’s thoughts, added. I think I liked Drake’s version more than Kate’s. Not because he is the more interesting person of the duo, but because we learn more of who he is in this story. I knew I was going to love this story right from the start, S.E. Lund ’s Drake had me at the 3 things you should understand about neurosurgeons: “Huge Balls, Laser-like focus. Hero Complex” Ha, arrogant much? The story flows nicely and as in the past book there is lots of drama, some angst and the start of a great romance. Yes, there is some kink, mild D/s as well as plenty of emotions.

I listened to the Audible edition, Jack Calihan is a wonderful narrator and voice performer. He brings the characters to life, gives each their own voice and personality. You can hear the emotions of the characters & the drama of the story in his performance. I loved his take on Drake, he gave him heart and he nailed his alpha Dom persona too. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen🎧
