Publisher's summary

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman return to the unforgettable world of the New York Times bestselling Dragonlance series as a new heroine—desperate to restore her beloved father to life—sets off on a quest to change time.

“I love Dragonlance and I love Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Plain and simple. Their books are my favorite fantasy series of all time.”—Joe Manganiello

Destina Rosethorn—as her name implies—believes herself to be a favored child of destiny. But when her father dies in the War of the Lance, she watches her carefully constructed world come crashing down. She loses not only her beloved father but also the legacy he has left her: the family lands and castle. To save her father, she hatches a bold plan—to go back in time and prevent his death.

First, she has to secure the Device of Time Journeying, last known to be in the possession of the spirited kender Tasslehoff Burrfoot. But to change time, she’ll need another magical artifact—the most powerful and dangerous artifact ever created. Destina’s quest takes her from the dwarven kingdom of Thorbardin to the town of Solace and beyond, setting in motion a chain of disastrous events that threaten to divert the course of the River of Time, alter the past, and forever change the future.

Critic reviews

“I love Dragonlance and I love Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Plain and simple. Their books are my favorite fantasy series of all time. I love the stories and ideas, but most of all, I love the characters. Why do we all feel like we know them? They are what spurred me to start working for D&D and what inevitably inspired me to pursue a career in showrunning.”—Joe Manganiello

It feels like coming home

DragonLance is the reason I love to read. I read my first in 4th or 5th grade and since then, I’ve read the Chronicles, Legends, and beyond more than once. Dragons of Deceit had some major shoes to fill. And it did with grace.
The narration is beautiful. The new characters are likable and interesting. I just wish I had the next book already. If you like fantasy at all check out Dragons of Deceit.

Poor Narration

I love this series. Margaret and Tracy expertly tied in this story with the characters that I have loved from previous novels.

The narrator however mispronounces some of the common names to this franchise throughout the text and I had difficulty following the story as I was taking mental capacity to correct her pronunciation instead of being able to concentrate on the story.

Loved the story, hated the narrator. I wish I'd purchased the hard copy.

great story. perfectvwork by Weiss and Hickman. the narrators performance and lack of preparation is absolutely unacceptable. the biggest thing for me is the mispronounced names. It ruined it for me.

Poor Inappropriate Writing

I'm sorry but I wasn't able to get through the first few chapters. I'll prefence that I love the main books of the series. In this excerpt from the first chapter of the book really bothered me:

Destina was in her bedchamber, admiring the new gown that she would wear tonight at the celebration dinner. The dress was white velvet, as became a maiden, trimmed with a rose motif stitched in crimson. The gown’s bodice was tight-fitting and settled over her curves like cream, coming to a point at the waist then flaring out into a long, flowing skirt.

The point of view character, Destina, in this chapter is just turning 15 years old. A 15 year old doesnt need to have discriptioms of maindenhood and being curvey. There is no reason to have it and it totally ruined my interest. Would rank it less than 1 star if I was able to.

Mispronouncing names

It bothers me that the narrators don't confirm how to say the names. It's obvious they haven't listened to previous books or they would know how to pronounce the names or other words in the Dragonlance world. It's a bit slow. Tasselhoff, Caramon, and Tika didn't show up until book 3. A little bit of a bummer, but I'm glad they showed up.

I’m sad to say this is not a good read

I am sad to say that this is not a good read. The book is very slow and didn’t even pick up after eight hours into listening. It was boring and the character development was shallow. I should not have been surprised since last year I went back as an adult (I’m age 50 now) to reread the original Dragonlance trilogy only to find that the books don’t hold up to what I remember as a teenager. I will not be finishing this book and I will not be purchasing any others in this trilogy. It is a shame since I love the world of Dragonlance. I will also not that I did not care for the reader’s performance/narration of the book. Honest review. My apologies for writing this feedback but I was compelled to share.

Nice trip back to Krynn

Wonderful trip back to Krynn however narrator needs to familiarise themselves with the character names.

Pronunciations.... sigh..

Narration had some excellent delivery, but the failure to pronounce Majere correctly among a few other lore words was highly distracting and ruined the otherwise decent performance.

Great Story

Don't let the title fool you, this is a dark story, about a woman who's father dies and she immediately loses everything he left her in his will then immediately, with no regard for anyone else, resorts to trying timetravel to try and get her stuff back no matter who it kills, brings back to life or changes time. The authors try and make you feel bad for her but this woman ruined lives just to try and save her stuff.

Returning home!

A great book! It was like coming home after many years. I love the Dragonlance series, and the OG writers (Weis & Hickman) are the greatest! I have 1 small complaint about the narrator's pronunciation of "Majere", but at least she was consistent.
It was good to be back among the Vallenwoods, I am looking forward to the next book.
