Publisher's summary
The classic first Dragonriders of Pern novel from New York Times best seller Anne McCaffrey.
The Dragons of Pern are the world's only defence against an ancient threat - Thread, an evil rain that devours everything it touches. Paired with their riders from the moment they hatch, they risk their lives burning the scourge of the Red Star from the sky. But the dragons are in decline - the Red Star hasn't posed a threat for generations, and the people of Pern have forgotten what they owe the Dragonriders. Only one Weyr remains, and the only dragon queen is dying....
F'lar knows that the Red Star is rising again and that the ancient threat will return. His only hope is the last queen egg and finding a woman strong enough to be the new queen's rider. But the villainous Lord Fax has other plans....

An ageless story of dragons and heroines/heroes
This story was written over 50 years ago, but it timeless and ageless. It is a superb story of hardships over come and, of course, of dragons 🐉 ridden by the women and men of Pern. Dragons that go between (teleport) instantly from place to place and speak to their riders telepathically. The appeal of this story is that it lets us imagine for a while what it would be like to fly on a dragon that can talk to you telepathically and take you anywhere in the world instantly - and that never gets old 😀

The first and the best!
Excellent narration of an unforgettable story that I first enjoyed many turns ago. Favourite line? "I told you he'd shake me!"

Good Story - appaling reading
First of the Pern books and a good story and introduction to Pern. But spoiled by truly appalling narration. Terrible voices and an irritating tone. Stopped listening half way through and book the book to actually finish the story. Don't waste your money - buy the book.

loved it as a child, loved it now a grandmother
Narration is beautiful to listen to.
A timeless story of dragons and riders. Their fight against a foe from another planet. A story that grips you from beginning to end and a world you are eager to learn more about.
So unique that it could of been written yesterday.

A trip down memory Lane
I really enjoyed reading the Pern novels oh so many years ago and have fond memories of the stories. I looked forward to this audio book version. The story is as good as ever with the exception that the relationships between men and women now seem rather dated. I wanted to shout at F’Lar “don’t shake her! It’s a form of assault and unworthy of you!”
That aside, it’s a well told story of “daring do” and fighting against the odds.
Narrator was good but really struggled when it came to Robinton. She simply could not produce his rich voice and it came out rather strangled.

Finally!
I’ve been frustrated in the past by the narrator of Dragonsong and Dragonsinger, etc. and have been waiting for aaaages for the rest of the Dragon books to be recorded unabridged. Finally audible are releasing the rest of the series and Sophie Aldred gives a satisfying performance. Her voices for the lord holders don’t quite match their descriptions but overall, she’s pleasant to listen to.
I’ve really enjoyed listening to this audiobook.

Excellent reading
I loved rediscovering Pern listening to the books again on audible. Sophie Aldred does an amazing job at brining the characters to life. I have listened to the first three books - which are great! However after listening to the samples of the for the other books in the series I will wait until they are re-recorded as the first three books have been - they are quite crackly and the performances seem quite dated. Please re-record the other books soon! And hire Sophie! She is awesome! :)

I loved these books when I was a kid.
She must have been so young and innocent when she wrote these books.
**spoilers**
When the MC is repeatedly raped the author sort of offhandedly acknowledges that it's a bit rapey but the MC is somehow not at all traumatized by it. She's just a little bit grumpy. It's all very casually mentioned like it was just an unfortunate way to lose one's virginity.
When the missing weyrs of Pern who have been fighting thread for 40 turns, undoubtedly losing people they love along the way and likely many being permanently scarred from battle, have finally survived to enjoy a few months of peace, they are somehow all totally peachy keen to give up everything they know to go right back to the trauma of war because they're bored with no more thread to fight.
Only someone who's led a trauma free life would think these things would be no big deal.
That being said, Pern will always hold a special place in my heart. The world is interesting and I love the blending if fantasy and sci-fi.
Sophie did a fantastic job of narrarating as usual, even if I did cringe a bit at the way she pronounced Igen (Hold and Weyr).
