One of the most respected and awarded of all contemporary science-fiction writers, Connie Willis repeatedly amazes her many admiring fans with her ability to create vivid characters in unusual situations. With Doomsday Book, she takes listeners on a thrilling trip through time to discover the things that make us most human.

For Oxford student Kivrin, traveling back to the 14th century is more than the culmination of her studies - it's the chance for a wonderful adventure. For Dunworthy, her mentor, it is cause for intense worry about the thousands of things that could go wrong. When an accident leaves Kivrin trapped in one of the deadliest eras in human history, the two find themselves in equally gripping - and oddly connected - struggles to survive.

Deftly juggling stories from the 14th and 21st centuries, Willis provides thrilling action - as well as an insightful examination of the things that connect human beings to each other.

Overall a good book, albeit a bit long in some places. The narrator did not have a huge vocal range but was distinctive enough for the main characters. I have now read 3 of the historians books. All are enjoyable, however I'm noticing a trend of strong female characters that feel they need "saving", which is a shame, given they lengths they go through to mage themselves in the past. I enjoyed the concept of the story and the "story in a story" and encourage someone looking for a different tye of fiction read to check it out.

I love this series. Willis has a fabulous knack for historical accuracy wound into historical, and marvelously interesting fiction. Each installment in the series carries itself as an independent work that simply
Improves as a series. Top notch.

First rate beginning of a series

I read this book in April 2020!!!!!!!! During a very real pandemic and am totally freaked out about how close to life on the planet in 2020 her words are. The mysterious illness, lockdowns, families separated, makeshift accommodation, contact tracing. viral sequencing and a race for a cure....f'ing hell. The parts in the 14th century were just a lovely rest from the horrors in Oxford.

I love her writing and have been reading her books totally out of sequence not realising there was an order to them. Having now read the 'first' book, I'm sure the order is irrelevant.

Is this a great imagination at work or does she have her own time machine?

Loved the narrator, as usually, a superb job.

OMG Connie has a time machine and she went to 2020

I was about to throw in the towel because the book just went on and on, but re-read some reviews that said the book got better towards the end. So I read a synopsis online and skipped to the last 2 hours and it did get very good. It also helped to increase the speed to 1.2. Excellent narration. I’m glad I listened to the the last two hours.

Way too long and repetitive
