Sometimes it only takes one bullet

J. A. Cipriano & Conner Kressley craft a very Starship Troopers type of tale that focuses on the CLint Eastwood of the Space Marines, a janitor name Mark Rider, who just happens to drink gasoline and whiz fire. He is a battle hardened vet who has lost so many people that he no longer wants ot get to know the members of his squad. Until, that is, he is hooked up with the son of one of his best friends who died 17 years before on a mission with Rider.

Now, he and his squad find themselves trapped on a planet the victims of a bug ambush, and it doesn't look good for any of them until the second best marine alive brings her squad into the fray. Together, they might just have a chance, if they could only learn to work together long enough to stay alive. Ego's clash and rules will be broken.

There are several things that set this book apart. The first is the overly corporate culture that now exists, and that the military personel have to purchase upgrades to their weapons and armor if they want to stay alive. Or, they can save their cash and buy out their contract. This is a pretty cool concept, and I would have liked it more if the character didn't bemoan this fact every five minutes. Aside from that the action flew, and blood fell like rain in a hurricane. The characters are interesting, and you root for them to make it, but this is the DOOMED infinity marine, after all.

Hellegers really pulls off Riders voice, as well as the ladies. No small feat.

I'd like to see a book two, just to see what happens now that the Earth military has learned of a larger menace than they were expecting. The bugsa re a great adversary, and are alien enough to keep things creepy. I'd heartily suggest this to anyone who likes space battles, power suits, aliens, and AI. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Action Battlefield Science Fiction Adventure

Doomed Infinity Marine
By: J. A. Cipriano, Conner Kressley
Narrated by: Neil Hellegers
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
This is a great science fiction, action packed, space adventure full of intelligent fighting giant bugs and a government that is not really too different than it is now, if soldiers really need to protect themselves...buy your own stuff! Lol. Our guy of the story if a real hero and happiness to meet up with the female counterpart of him. It takes her and her two soldiers and Mark try to work together.
The narrator was just right. Sounded like a real soldier! Made me feel like I was on the battlefield. Great job. Love this author's books anyway.

Starship Troopers meets LitRPG

A jaded and grizzled veteran soldier is sent into the heart of the enemy force, to get material that the war machine wants to continue their profiting off the war for the future or humanity. Humanity now entirely lead by corporations make their soldiers pay for their own gear and any top of the line abilities. Mark Rider is sent into a mission that goes sideways and has to try and battle his way out of a moon filled with nothing but aliens looking to kill him.

The narration by Neil Hellegers is entirely enjoyable. His voice for Mark Rider especially is great choice, he has a rough and gravely voice that makes him seem like a tough soldier just off speech. He also does great on the different female voices and aliens he encounters.

Cipriano and Kressley have brought a pessimistic future of humanity into the fold in this book, and it makes you really dislike the commanding forces of Earth. There is a lot of introspection from the main character and it is the main vehicle used to let us know the inner workings of this world. There are a ton of battles with aliens and some fun character interactions thrown in.

I look forward to the future adventures of Mark and the Artemis squad.

Literary equivalent of a popcorn flick.

Another great series by Cipriano and Kressley! Doomed Infinity Marine is the literary equivalent of a summer blockbuster popcorn flick. What does that mean? It means don't look for hard science, don't look for a complex plot with lots of subtle subtext. What you see (or in this case what you hear) is what you get. And what do you get exactly? Lots and lots of fast paced over the top action. Doomed Infinity Marine is what you'd get if you merged Starship Troopers with a video game. Seriously the way weapons and upgrading works feels like it could have been pulled straight out of a video game...and I thought it was an absolute blast. The adventure was just flat out fun.

The book is narrated by Neil Hellegers, and while I've listened to his work in the past and have always enjoyed it, this time he really knocked it out of the park. This is definitely my favorite of his works to date. I hope he'll be narrating the sequel.

Not the typical J.A. Cipriano book

Not the typical J.A. Cipriano book, in ways reminiscent of Isaac Hook's work. The narrator was fabulous (think the raspy voice of Clint Eastwood) adding unmatched character to this book. No spoilers from me though, buy the book, read the book, get into a very good read! I eagerly await the next book in the series.

Better then I ever wanted to give it credit for,

This book is WAY better then I ever wanted to give it credit for, and that's not a bad thing! I got this book for that action movie turn your brain off and go for a ride feeling. Its got a Starship Troopers feel to it and it plays that to its advantage. It can get a little introspective with Mark Ryder our MC, but it explains the world in a way I loved because it brought Mark to life for me. With his feelings of the world and the state of everything. Also the Narration by Neil Hellegers is top notch. he can get the gruff veterain, the new "Grass feds", and the women cast a distinctive voice.

This is not "Doomed"

This author has always found the perfect reader for his stories, this is no exception. His voices were right on especially Lt. Ryder.
Lots of action, a witty AI, some female companionship and a new world where The Alliance is in control of fighting really, really big bugs. Glad to see this series continue. It's definitely worth the credit and time.

7.5 out of 10

Enjoyed the would and would recommend it. The author randomly overly describes Marks emotions at several points in the story. I remember three times where I was annoyed to the point to I wanted to skip forward. The story is good except for the repetitive, story halting description of Marks emotions.

pleasantly pleased

I was surprised with the book myself. I used my monthly credit on it after reading the reviews and was very happy I did so. And for those worried any adults scenes might be to naughty I personally wouldnt consider anything above Pg13 other then a bit of language.

Oh Hell yeah!

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is my first book narrated by Neil Hellegers, but he kicked ass. His gravelly voice is perfect for Mark Ryder. That being said, this is one of those books you have to go in with your expectations realistic. This is pretty much what would happen if Ash from Army of Darkness was in Starship Troopers. There is lots of action, sarcasm and sex. If you want a good, action-filled, book with sarcasm and gravitas, this book is for you.

why so much introspection?!

When something is flying away you shouldn't be spending 3mins talking about a plan to catch them. then spend an extra 3mins with inner monologue. made everything feel slow and drawn out.
