Publisher's summary

Most humans have no idea that a dark and deadly underworld, filled with magic and monsters, exists. They wander through life blissfully ignorant of the supernatural world around them. Nora Jacobs is different. Nora knows exactly what kinds of hellish creatures haunt the streets of Detroit.

Thanks to a unique set of psychic abilities, Nora has managed to steer clear of the underworld most of her life. But all that changes the night the most powerful vampire in the city discovers her gifts and decides to use her as a tool to find one of his missing clan members.

As if that's not bad enough, Nora believes she's cursed. All her life, people, especially men, have been drawn to her - some to the point of obsession and violence. Underworlders, it seems, are not immune to this curse, and now she's caught the attention of some of the most dangerous monsters in the city. Neck deep in an investigation only she can solve, Nora quickly makes as many new allies as she does enemies. Her biggest problem is staying alive long enough to decide which is which.

Contains mature themes.

Pleasantly Surprised

I go through a lot of fantasy books a month, so I tend to try many different authors. I was pleasantly surprised by this story. It is shorter than I prefer by was entertaining the entire time. The characters and plot were built quickly so the beginning didn’t drag. The narrating is well done, no annoying quarks to her voice. I am looking forward to more from this series and author.

GOOD. INTERESTING STORYLINE.

Good plot. The protagonist have problems but luckily she met up with some allies/friends to support her. Fast paced action from the start. The storyline is good and leave room for further development. Hollie Jackson's performance/narration is perfect. She brings out the different characters well and her male voices are acceptable. The first book in this series turned out very well. Worth a credit. I will continue with book 2.

didn’t bother to finish it

I agree that the cast of characters and personalities are excellent and the story premise well designed but the poor logic used to explain the heroines’ actions devalued the book just when it should have become most important. Also the monologues for everyone internally dialogued by the mind reading heroine are shallow and underdeveloped. I honestly believe this author can get there, and I will keep an eye on her but this book didn’t stand up to the reviews it’s been getting. The narrator’s tone indicates she was just as bored as I was and the sing song pattern annoyed the eardrums. OTOH I did move on to the second book in the series and found it improved in most of the areas that this one was lacking in.

Good story but the men turned to boys

I liked the book until the end, when the exhausted heroine had to boost the men’s attitudes. It began to feel like a reverse harem book and made the “men” seem like boys that needed a mother figure.

We need more Kate Daniels and less Nora’s...

Seriously the most dumb thing I’ve ever read/listened to. I’m so tired of authors making the lead women portrayed as dumb, gullible, beautiful little wall flowers that fall into trouble only to be saved by her one true love. These Cinderella stories are getting old. Fast. Nora, who all guys fall so in love with her bordering on obsession, is a child. She’s weak and picks unnecessary fights at every turn but men seam to find this attractive and can’t get enough of her. Come on. A women can be sweet, smart mouthed, and kick ass all at once. They don’t have to be helpless all the damn time! This seems to be a theme with a lot of women authors. I find stories written by men have the women be more independent, which is just sad. And the fact that this book/series is getting so many 5 star reviews says something about what the audience wants, which is why so many authors are making books with this story line. It’s sad and disgusting IMHO. I’ve also been noticing an irritating pattern where weak women are saved by 5 guys aka the despicable “Reverse Harem” series. The fact that authors AND audiences alike keep portraying women/teens to be weak minded, gullible, angsts-y, says something about the society we live in today.like I said in my title... Audible needs more Kate Daniels and less Nora’s in the market.

Interesting Story

Absolutely enjoyed this book. The main character has a pretty sad backstory... but for the most part, the actual plot was fairly lighthearted and a fun listen. I can’t wait for the second audiobook and the third book!

lead Character Whines to Much.

lead Character whined throughout the book about
how she doesn't take charity and how she doesn't date. It was nauseating to the point that I put the book down 3 times and walked away.

NO!

I didn't finish this book. The characters are annoying. Although the plot might be passable, I really don't care about the characters. Hollie Jackson did okay with the narration.

Finally a story to get lost in

Spent the last couple of months trying to find a new series to immerse myself in. Found some interesting stuff but this is the first one I’ve listened to almost none stop. I will definitely read the second book and hope to find more in the series. Not been so involved in a story since reading Deborah Harkness last summer.

Quick read, fun but a bit slight

I really enjoyed the Demon Hunter series so I thought I'd give this a try. It's similar in tone, but feels a bit thin compared to the other series. The characters aren't as well developed. The main character has such a horrific past which also casts her gift in a very scary light, it makes it hard for the rest of the story that feel like a fun caper.

Okay

I almost have up on it, the story was pretty silly, everything revolved around the main character but I couldn't understand why, she was so irritating. I also don't get why every male wanted to claim her/ was besotted with het, so annoying. I did not enjoy the narrator so that was another minus for me

poor writing, poor storytelling, trauma-porn...

Hollie Jackson's performance was pretty great. she's a wonderful performer, clear and emotional.
Other than Hollie Jackson's performance.... I don't have much positive to say.
If you want a example of a book that only tells and never shows feeling, this is the book for you.
If you want a book where the MC knows everyone's thoughts and feelings at all times, this is the book for you (Nora is a touch telepath/empath but she doesn't need to be touching people to know EXACTLY what they're thinking and feeling all the time).
If you like books where the MC has been so thoroughly traumatised that you become numb to the very notion of assault, then this is the book for you.
If you want a book where sketchy behaviour varies from creepy to adorable purely based on how attractive the perpetrator is, this is the book for you.
I wanted to find something positive to say, I really did. But I have nothing positive to share about this. I am utterly shocked this book has made it into a series and I regret spending my credit on it.

Trollific

Loved this!!!
The story focuses around Nora a not so normal human and the madness she gets involved in due to her special uncontrollable abilities. This audiobook is filled with sexy men and a different take on the whole underworld scene, which is sooooooo refreshing. A must read for those who love the paranormal world and the differing species and charms. Highly recommend !!!
Also it’s not full of heavy sexual context the way some paranormal romances are, you can genuinely feel how all the characters are getting to know each other and see how each bond is developing with meaningful interactions.
CON: I have run out of credits this month and can’t get the second book yet!! It’s going to be a long agonising wait 😿

Fantastic start!

Fantastic start to the series! Very slow burn but lots of intrigue and I'm curious to see where the story takes me. I'm not 100% loving the narrator. I feel like her voice doesn't quite match Nora or the situations but I'll be listening to the next two books on audible as well.

The performance is good, but the story is....

This is going to be a reverse harem, I personally don't enjoy any harem/reverse harem story, so I'm quite biased in that regard. There are so many plot holes, so the main character is a loner all her life, guys are supposed to be distrustful, she only had terrible experiences with guys but she can talk to them, and be a social butterfly whenever she wants? She makes friends easily, trusts people easily, which doesn't make sense. There are dark themes, triggered themes in the book whenever she mentions her past, if a darker theme of abuse triggers you, please stay clear of this book.

interesting start to a series

The story and world building were interesting and enjoyable dispite things being a little predictable.
The charecters felt reasonably rounded. MC is clearly going to end in a why choose situation and the prospective love interests stand out.
The narrator was a little jarring to start with and the different voices are sometime hard to pick. But as the story went on they got to really show their versatility with the female charecters.

Predictable, boring, sooky heroine

Not what I thought it would be. The heroine was boring, predictable, her actions and thoughts were repetitive and she really played on the “poor me” narrative the entire book. I had to force myself to finish this. Waste of an audible credit
