Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Kayvan Novak, Josh Cohen, Alistair Petrie and Richard Hughes.

Don Quixote has become so entranced by reading romances of chivalry that he determines to become a knight errant and pursue bold adventures, accompanied by his squire, the cunning Sancho Panza. As they roam the world together, the ageing Quixote's fancy leads them wildly astray. At the same time the relationship between the two men grows in fascinating subtlety.

Often considered to be the first modern novel, Don Quixote is a wonderful burlesque of the popular literature with which its disordered protagonist is obsessed.

Great book. Strong intro narrator. Rest isn't him

Great book, no question there, this is about the deception related to narration. The sample is from the introduction, which has a high energy, entertaining narrator that seems this audiobook apart from the many other versions available. Then the introduction ends, and the rest is read by a much more normal, lower energy narrator, which is fine, but not what the sample sells you on, and in so doing, misrepresents what you're getting so many hours of.

Doesn't do its original version in Spanish justice

This is a phenomenal story. If you speak and read multiple languages, put this down and find it in Spanish. The language throughout the book is great but its void of the romanticism that Cervantes uses in his language. No te arrepentirás!

Absolutely wonderful

I’m not sure I can even find words to say how much I loved this audiobook. There’s the novel itself, of course: sheer genius from one end to the other, riotously funny and deeply moving at the same time, and about as “meta” as they come. And the translation, graceful, idiomatic, and punchy: no Knight of the Woeful Countenance here; he’s the Knight of the Sorry Face. And the songs rhyme. But the real pleasure for me came from the masterful reading by the team of narrators. I didn’t keep track of who read which part, but ultimately it didn’t matter, because they were all outstanding. The conversations between Knight and Squire are nailed cold. The introduction is included, one of the best decisions Penguin made when they began this series: it adds immeasurably to the value of each title. This one includes a discussion of the problems of translating the novel. I can’t wait for the memory of this experience to simmer long enough to make me want to listen to it all over again.

Great Story, Phenomenally Performed.

A great and mildly humourous story narrerated phenomenally. Don Quixote tries instilling his mad wisdoms on the world surrounding him. The book could drag at times but it provided much needed depth to truly understand Don Quixote's nature.

Long but interesting

Don Quixote was one of those books I’d listen to in the background of getting ready. It truly is entertaining and enjoyable.

Long story, but an entertaining one

I thought it was very well done. I have not read it in spanish. so this opinion only comes from this being the first time I've gone through this novel in the English language. I was surprised at the various parts when Don Quixote - and the other characters - did not have the same voice. However, that's easily adjustable. Some of the wilder depictions of characters are much appreciated in aiding the listener with how we're supposed to perceive that character

It's a LONG story. But very well worth it and very well presented. Recommend.

Outstanding

I often laughed out loud! I did not expect such humor! I’m sorry I don’t speak/read Spanish. I’ve heard that humor doesn’t translate as well as other genre!

Slow to very slow at times

I enjoyed this book even though I found some parts very boring. I found hard to enjoy the critique of literary genres and the poems but loved the quirky humor which pervades the book and makes it unique.

There's a reason this is regarded as a Classic

Don Quixote is a book many never get around to reading, and one with which many book lovers have merely a passing acquaintance - usually confined to the early episode of Quixote's tilt against the windmills. But this book is much more than that, and this superbly narrated translation does justice to what is rightly regarded as a classic work of literature.

Such is the work's coherence that one often forgets during this adventure that it is an episodic novel; most of the characters who appear in it are nonce characters who never appear again - and one very important character never actually appears in person at all! Cervantes appears to realise round about chapter 8 that he has stumbled upon a wonderful vehicle for exploring the human experience, and what may have started out as a short story resolves itself into first a novela, and then something utterly new, bold and exciting - the modern novel.

The alert reader enters on this journey with Cervantes and there are sublime moments of discovery as well as plenty of genuinely laugh-out-loud moments on the way. The development of character, in particular Sancho Panza (though that might merely be a personal preference), is impressive, but equally fascinating is the interplay of text and textuality - this is a novel that knows it's a novel and happily takes time to explore with the reader the boundaries of the form and the possibilities of the partnership the author forms with the reader.

There are few books about which one can say with confidence they will remain immortal. Don Quixote is one of them. I'm in the flush of having recently completed my reading of it (it took me about five weeks - mainly listening on my commute in the car), but I'm an experienced enough reader to know that this feeling of euphoria is not because of merely having ticked a book off my book list, but rather of having made the acquaintance of a cast of characters from the canon of world literature who will continue to give enjoyment for years to come.

awful

The prologue was read so well. The book itself seems to have been read by a robot with little sense of the meaning, and very strange intonation.
Having read this book years ago, and knowing how beautiful it is, it is very disappointing that it has been rendered unlistenable.

This is such a long book

It took me 1,5 months to finish it. I didn’t enjoy reading it but I became attached to the characters after spending so much time with them.

I do not enjoy this genre of comedy, but I see why this book is such a classic.
