Publisher's Summary

Toby Clement's third epic historical audiobook set during England's bloody and brutal War of the Roses. If you liked Conn Iggulden's Stormbird, you will love Toby Clements' Kingmaker novels.

Lent, 1469. The recent wars between the House of York and the House of Lancaster seem over. The Yorkist King Edward sits on his throne in Westminster while the Lancastrian claimants are in exile or under lock and key in the Tower. But within the family of York, there is discord.

The Earl of Warwick conspires against his king, and while to one another's faces they are all smiles, their household men speak in lies and whispers. No man comes to court unarmed. Thomas and Katherine have returned to Marton Hall, the only home they know.

But what lies buried in the past cannot remain so for long, and soon they are forced to take up arms once more in one of the most savage wars in history. The War of the Roses....

Superb historical series!

Yet again, Jack Hawkins brings the next Kingmaker book to life. He is brilliant. "Divided Souls" is just wonderful. The characters are developing and growing, along with all the intrigues of the English kingdom. An added extra is Catherine's growing expertise as a healer and surgeon-these scenes are amazing. I feel enriched by having listened to these wonderful stories. Please hurry up and write book 4, Toby Clements!!

Very enjoyable

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Thoroughly recommend the series so far, can't wait for book 4

What about Jack Hawkins’s performance did you like?

Jack has a slow deliberate voice that teases the listener and adds to the natural suspense of the plot. He makes the characters natural without too many accents and thankfully no comical voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If only I could !

Any additional comments?

Toby is a natural story teller. The high level historical stuff is a backdrop to a very enjoyable tale about people but where Toby really goes the extra mile is making you feel what life must have been like for ordinary people, so many books concentrate on nobility. Granted some of the scenes are a little unrealistic and the surgical descriptions are not for the fainthearted but they fit the plot superbly and enhance the rich portrait of the time. Many thanks Toby, lets have the next one ASAP

Gripping

This is a very enjoyable book. An engaging, historical story in a series but can be listened to even if you haven't heard or read the others.

An enthralling tale from start to end.,

Really well-drawn characters. Although set against an historical backdrop, you don't need to be into historical novels to enjoy this. Can't wait to read book four.

Decent series.

Gushing reviews put this on on par with the likes of the Shardlake series. It's pretty good overall, but NOT up to the standard of CJ Sansom.

TB isn't big on humour, in fact, he might be allergic to it, such is his effort to avoid it's touch.

JH is an adequate narrator, with a bit of a tendency toward monotone. He falls down when he attempts "characters". This inevitably brings out his "acting" voice, involving pausing between every word and doing a husky voice. Be the "character" old or young, that's what we get.
However, these bursts of inspiration are luckily few. He's fine when he just narrates.
