Publisher's Summary

One morning in April 1924, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher finds herself in a most unenviable position. Despite her best attempts to elude the inevitable, she must face her darkest fears and with all the strength and courage she can muster, must confront the one person she has tried hardest to avoid - the dentist. But upon arriving for her appointment, she finds the waiting room deserted and adjoining examination room locked, with no hint of either Dr. Talmadge or his nurse. Thinking to leave quietly, Daisy's retreat is halted by the return of the nurse and, with the help of Mrs. Talmadge, the two begin searching for the inexplicably absent doctor. Exhausting all other possibilities, they resort to looking once again in the surgery where they find him stilling in his dentist's chair with the nitrous mask strapped to his face, the tank of nitrous turned on full, a smile on his face and stone-cold dead.

While the circumstances of his death are out of the ordinary, there's no reason to suspect that it was anything other than a tragic, if inevitable, accident of a careless dope fiend. Certain that there is something more than happenstance and an accident involved in the dentist's untimely death, Daisy is determined to uncover the truth behind a case of what she is certain is murder most foul.

Very enjoyable

The series continues to improve with the introduction of some new characters, friends of Daisy, and continued character development. Now that we have a good handle on the characters, the machinations between them are more complex letting each character shine and grow. On to the next book!

nice listening, great pergormance

Enjoyed the story, quite a few colorful characters. would have loved it more if not for constant interruption in narrative close to the end.

Alec's voice could be improved

Although Rayner performs most characters well, especially female ones, Alec sounds dim- witted and flat.

Did another writer take over in the middle?

I like these characters, so it's difficult to stop. Hearing some historical references in the previous book was refreshing and sucked me back in. This book was wonderful for the first half. Regarding the previous book, a reviewer commented that the writer seemed to be loosening up. I agreed. - despite the author's beating us over the head with what started out as a clever joke. After a few chapters, she explained and referenced it ad nauseum.
This book turned muddy and maudlin about halfway through with many quick, unclear setting changes, particularly when Daisy was speaking in first person. It took a few to several lines to realize that the narrator was using Daisy's voice for her 3rd person naration.

Slow and jump to conclusions

all over the place, slow at times, then summed up in a flash. not sure I can keep going with a narrator that makes the inspector sound stupid and a thug.

Awful narration!!

The narrator is so inconsistent between the different characters I keep having to back up and re-listen. The cadence is even more distracting. She pauses for too long and in the wrong place. I can't really tell if the story is good or not, hence 3 stars. The voices are very fake and overdone. The voice for Daisy is the worst! It is like nails on a chalkboard. The one for Fletcher sounds like a parody or caricature. I would return if I could but for some reason it's not eligible for return.
