ERIKA CHRISTENSEN, Award-winning Actress (Traffic, Parenthood, Will Trent)

“After using Dianetics I had so much more of a deep understanding of the mind and consequently I felt so much more like myself for the first time. I can’t imagine any artists not wanting to truly be themselves.”

STANLEY CLARKE, Four-time Grammy Award–winning Bassist and Composer

Dianetics is the only thing that truly handled the mental barriers holding me back, irrational fears, unwanted emotions and self-doubt. It helped me understand and resolve them all.”

JASON DOHRING, Actor (Veronica Mars)

“After sustaining a knee injury playing football, the mental battle was the hardest part. Dianetics fixed all of that. It helped me get past the doubt and trust my body again.”

I'm sure there are some good take aways from this, but I think it's mostly a novelty.

Not what I expected

Don't hate all of it, don't agree with most of it, definitely didn't need to listen to all of it, but I did. Don't be like me.

Obnoxiously repetitive

unless you are looking to be an auditor and have deep pockets for training this audio book is useless .

Save your money.

Apparently abortions play a big part in mental issues according to this book. That and domestic violence.

Seems like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me.
He uses so many words that you have no idea what they mean. I think he did this to make people think he was smarter than he really was and knew what he was talking about. I could I guess believe that this process could work for some but not all people. I on the other hand am not convinced this meaning Scientology is a religion and some type of science.
I think where all this got cuckoo was when greed set in with the author. Once he saw how much money he was making and could make like an other human he wanted to keep it all.
So being creative and a crook he said all this mumbo jumbo the "science of the mind" was a religion and turned the process into a church.
This way he didn't have to pay taxes on his works that had something to do this the "church".
In my opinion I think this decision is where he lost all credibility. I think that some of this meaning the process of Dianetics could work for some and help those people that believe in it.
But to think for one second that your mind is a like a memorex tape and that it has recorded every single sound, visual, motion, or anything else at any given time in your life and can be recalled all the way back to when you were in the womb or even a sperm is just completely idiotic. If this " science of the mind"
was so life changing and amazing and can help so many people then why is the world in the state it is? This discovery was discovered in 1950 and has been read by millions of people. If this was so revolutionary then why are we all not "clear" and changing the world? I will tell you why because to think for one second that with this book the processes such as auditing and spending a lot of money for "therapy" that you can become smarter, successful, never get sick, have no diseases, have no pain, no depression or anxiety is just the dumbest idea ever. I mean come on think of what you are saying. In my opinion there is no way honestly to ever become a "clear" there is no such thing. We are human and the mistakes and emotions we bare is what makes us human, and no book is ever going to change that.

A “Clear” reached out to me and suggested I read this book and we’d discuss it. It went on for a few weeks and I got through about 50% of the book.

I’m not gay or an abortion activist but the book lost me when they are applying their moral and spiritual beliefs onto others suggesting “something is wrong” with those people.

While I have my limitations on “love is love” (because, where do we draw the line?) I also think we have absolutely no moral authority to pass judgment about others especially if it may possibly be underlying biological differences .

Don’t waste your time and money

What would have made Dianetics better?

The book just rambled. I'm hoping it eventually got to a point or some sort of action plan, I just couldn't hang in there. It kept going in circles without giving any kind of real information.

What was most disappointing about L. Ron Hubbard’s story?

There was no story.

What does Lloyd Sherr bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I probably wouldn't have made it past the first page if I hadn't been plugged into an audio book and taking a walk.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment.

I gave up before the book made any kind of point.

A curiously thorough review on the history, concepts, and practice of a science of mind that is almost, but not quite, entirely made up.

Hard PsyFi

Interesting expansion of the Western understanding of psychology. This 2 part model of mind is instructive and self admittedly isolated like the 3 part model of Sigmund Freud. it's view of the mind has no biological, cosmological or bioEnergetic components.

For comparison see the earliest psychology writings in recorded history I.e. The AstroPsychology of Classical African Civilization, Kemet (ancient Egypt). Metu Neter,

However, Hubbard is brilliant and this is a good read for anyone interested in access to the Spirit/mind

Interesting innovative prenatal focus

Overall, I would classify this as the self-edifying ramblings of an arguably insane man. Hubbard drew from proven principles of psychology and human behavior, twisting them to his own definitions and manifestations.

Science, by definition, proposes hypotheses, theories, and proofs. Hubbard proposes theories and then simply states: "And this is scientific fact". No proofs are offered other than the previous statement and more fictitious ramblings. Those who are unfamiliar with the workings of the mind have obviously been duped by this collection of verbal vomit for 70 years.

Some of the most off-putting theories put forth are that, according to Hubbard, a large portion of the population is "abborhated" by their mother attempting numerous abortions on them before birth, given "engrams" by being knocked unconscious during coitus while an embryo, or having heartburn because your mother's attempted abortion pierced your stomach during the procedure. Add orgasms knocking an embryo unconscious and therefore causing engrams, everyone's father violently abusing the mother, and the dozens of other times we have apparently been knocked unconscious during our lives we apparently don't remember, and this flowery work of fiction makes itself obvious for what it is: ramblings of a troubled soul.

What happens when fiction is believed? Dianetics.
