Story
Geary believed in the Alliance. Even when he uncovered overwhelming evidence that the highest echelons of the government and fleet command were involved in secret programs and prison camps, he believed it was worth saving. He believed his duty was to see that justice was served even though some factions feared that revealing the truth would cause the Alliance to crumble. But after narrowly surviving two assassination attempts when he brings evidence of the misdeeds to the capital star system, Geary realizes that some want to get rid of him.

They hunt us. They bomb our worlds for target practice. A star cluster in the constellation of Orion rotates once every 1,000 years. Those who rule there have an ancient tradition: When each cycle ends, they train their fleets by spilling the blood of lesser beings. The enemy fleets are coming again. In response, the Rebel Worlds gather their starships to face the terrifying threat, and this time humanity is asked to stand with them. The last time they considered Earth, Vikings in longboats were raiding English coastlines. Today, we're less primitive. Today, we're a target.

Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

Publisher's Summary
In the thrilling conclusion to the Legacy of Dragons trilogy, ancient weapons of mass destruction lie hidden under the city of Pacta Servanda. Remnants of the Great Guilds and rebellious factions of the Empire want to seize those weapons to allow them to regain control of the world of Dematr. Only Jason, brought by the first ship from Earth since the colony failed, might be able to disarm the threat. But he also might know how to employ those weapons, making him a danger for all sides.
Standing between those threats is Kira of Dematr. But Kira, who inexplicably has been able to manifest Mage powers as well as technical skills, finds herself being consumed by the mental conflicts between those powers and skills. As rogue Mechanics, Mages, and mercenaries attack with every weapon at their disposal, Kira suffers more blackouts and begins to lose her mind. The fate of her world rests on whether she can stay alive and find answers in time to problems that no one else has ever confronted.

Worth the wait
Would you listen to Destiny of Dragons again? Why?
The previous books in this series of series: revisiting them with a re-listen has been enjoyable. Will likely listen again after reading a few dozen other books.
What other book might you compare Destiny of Dragons to and why?
Flanagan's Ranger books, McCaffrey Dragon Riders, HarperHall as sequence of deadly challenges books. Wrede Far West; Delaney Last Apprentice esp. I Am Alice for the female focus (perhaps with a touch of Tamara Pierce's Alanna). The stories flow like MacHale Pendragon books - action.
Any additional comments?
I know the maturing relationship of these soon to be 18 year olds is central (and refreshing), but I could have done with a few less "I don't deserve your love" speeches.

Extremely Disapoointed
What disappointed you about Destiny of Dragons?
I loved the first series of books, and while slightly let down with the start of the second series, was optimistic. That said, this book completely turned me off the series. What once was a series with intrigue and suspense, is now a tale of a whinny teenage girl and the struggles of her trying to sleep with her teenage boyfriend. MacLeod does what he can to be compelling and is always a great listen, but listening to him ask the question "are you sure you want to be with me" approximately 45 time in the first 3 chapters was enough for me to delete it from my library.
Have you listened to any of MacLeod Andrews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
He's always spot on, and in this case was the only positive of the book.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Destiny of Dragons?
Any mention of her referencing Jason as "my man" and the plethora of time wasted discussing their relationship.

schizophrenic melodramatic drudgery
listening to this book was like having a month-long argument with the schizophrenic who hates you. if you like melodramatic schizophrenic teenage can't have sex but want it dramas that is worse than the Star Wars episodes with Anakin and Padme this book's for you. I get what the author was trying to do and actually like the other books from the author but this was absolute drudgery. I suggest if the author ever writes a book like this again he should summarize the bad bits and focus on the good bits. Nobody wants to read a book and endure this. what a mess

This series lacks the charm of the first
The character of Kira has all of the annoying traits of her mother Maria from the first series with none of the charm. Kira is a wholly annoying and unlikable. Maria had the weight of the world thrust on her shoulders. Kira picks up that weight by choice and then complains about having to carry it. This story is also and idiot plot. Kira just makes bad decisions because she is and idiot and either doesn’t ask the obvious questions or is not told key information. By the third book this wears really thin and makes her complaining seem like whining. Jason her secondary character is a deep and as interesting as cardboard. He never really grows beyond the bumbling love struck fool. This book series tried to recreate the compelling magic of the first but it failed to get what the first series got right. Kira has everything so contriving to set her alone and isolated is not compelling, it’s characters being dumb.

Loved It
As I have loved k all these books. The narrator is awesome. He does female voices perfectly - Not stupidly. His multiple accesses for the different nationalities are consistent and realistic - Not overdone. His narrator voice is passant and I could listen to it forever.
This book is great for juniors, but I'm no young adult and I have read all of them and look forward to more.
I probably like the young adult books better because there are no explicit sex scenes, and at nearly 60, I prefer my sex to be private - and everyone else's also.
I highly recommend this book for any age.

My First 4-star to Jack Campbell
This was my least favorite book in this series, and also when compared with the Pillars of Reality. I LOVE Jack Campbell and I LOVE MacLeod Andrews. Seriously amazing talent.
I have the ENTIRE Lost Fleet series, Beyond the Frontier, and all the new side series. LOVE THEM. Jack Campbell is amazing. I just found this book really frustrating at times. Sure Jason is loyal and Kira is great, but then at times they weren't. It descended too far, I think, into the Young Adult (YA) realms of action and relationship development. As an adult, a father and a husband, I was just annoyed at a few moments by how poorly these two were making their decisions! I know, I know, they're young, but I just feel like the plot mechanisms could have taken a different course that was a bit less... ehhhh... reliant on Jason and Kira's youthful-yet-crazily-responsible relationship to further the story.
Love Jack Campbell. I'd rate this as the worst book of his that I've read (like 30 books of his?) and it's still a 4+ out of 5.
MacLeod, you are AWESOME. I don't think I've ever heard a MacLeod Andrews narration that was not a 5 star performance.
THANK YOU BOTH

Different but entertaining
This book really threw me off. The story was your standard Lady Kira until about half way into the book. After nearly another quarter of the book causing some serious annoyance and anxiety to the change of character, it got better. Just to leave another cliff hanger for a book not yet available...

Why suppressing shoving things down just explodes
I really struggled to finish. By chapter 12 I was really sick of willing Kiera to get the hint that shoving down her mage powers was backfiring. I skipped through the next few chapters to see if it got better, ultimately just speeding through the last chapter. For someone so smart and resourceful she really screwed up and I couldn't keep listening to that.

The Final Book in the Trilogy
Mild Spoiler Alert!
This review will contain spoilers to those who haven't listened to the previous two books.
This book is a hard listen, because it's very similar to previous adventures where Kira and Jason run off and do their own thing. Their actions defy common sense and ki da ignore some of the character development from the previous two books.
Jason is a wet weekend and is just along for the ride as he agrees with whatever Kira says and does... I thought he would of grown a bit in character development but I am wrong.
Overall though the trilogy has been a good listen and I haven't regretted buying it, be warned that book three is a slower of the books and has more of the same kind of action and the previous two books.
I can't fault the narration, all three books have been narrated really really well!

Destiny of a Whining Teenage Girl!
Goodness me. Keira just shut up! She’s really quite annoying. Thankfully she, thanks to Jason; understands what she has to do and all is well!! I’d sussed it out as soon as she blacked out .... but then I’m no longer a teenager, and I have the ability to listen to others. Thankfully as it’s my profession. However MacLeod Andrews is, his usual wonderful self. Thank you. Jack has written another wonderful book. Regardless of the annoying main character. Hopefully there’ll be more. Overall a fabulously good listen. Made wonderful by the exceptional narrator.
