Welcome to the Five Isles, where war has come in the name of the invading army of Sor Sevier, a merciless host driven by the prophetic fervor of the Angel Prince, Aeros, toward the last unconquered kingdom of Gul Kana. Yet Gault, one of the elite Knights Archaic of Sor Sevier, is growing disillusioned by the crusade he is at the vanguard of just as it embarks on his Lord Aeros' greatest triumph. While the eldest son of the fallen king of Gul Kana now reigns in ever increasing paranoid isolationism, his two sisters seek their own paths.

Marcus' hero days are behind him. He knows too well that even the smallest war still means somebody's death. When his men are impressed into a doomed army, staying out of a battle he wants no part of requires some unorthodox steps. Cithrin is an orphan, ward of a banking house. Her job is to smuggle a nation's wealth across a war zone, hiding the gold from both sides. She knows the secret life of commerce like a second language, but the strategies of trade will not defend her from swords. Geder, sole scion of a noble house, has more interest in philosophy than in swordplay.

Ignore the Publisher's Summary! This is Amazing!

Publisher's Summary
For almost a hundred years, Hadrian Marlowe has served the empire in its war against the Cielcin, a vicious alien race bent on humanity's destruction. Rumors of a new king among the Cielcin have reached the imperial throne. This one is not like the others. It does not raid borderworld territories, preferring precise, strategic attacks on the humans' empire.
To make matters worse, a cult of personality has formed around Hadrian, spurred on by legends of his having defied death itself. Men call him Halfmortal. Hadrian's rise to prominence proves dangerous to himself and his team, as those within the imperial government distrust or resent his new influence.
Caught in the middle, Hadrian must contend with enemies before him and behind.
And above it all, there is the mystery of the Quiet. Hadrian did defy death. He did return. But the keys to the only place in the universe where Hadrian might find the answers he seeks lie in the hands of the emperor himself....

Fantastic!
A absolutely fantastic new entry into what is the best (if not one of the best) current science fiction series being written. I also really enjoy The Expanse and Red Rising. It is hard to reconcile the old man reminiscing on his life in the opening pages of the first book with the young naive Hadrian in the same novel but this book is another important piece to that puzzle and journey.
The author really impressed me by walking many fine lines. There is enough philosophy and musings to add zest but does not overwhelm like the latter Malazan novels and Kharkanus books. There are many dark things in the books but there is also hope and goodness. There are a lot of fun science fiction tropes and yet it feels new and dynamic. Well done sir! Look forward to the next book and the audiobook has a fantastic narrator as well.

The Real Triple Threat
This work stands alone among a few that combine excellent, gripping narration standing atop a story worthy of it. Ruocchio and Roukin are a power house combo that is an aural delight. Building on the first two novels and the handful of short stories, Ruocchio manages to deliver a thrilling, moving, and stunning third installment that manages to top the heights of its predecessors.

Excellent book from an excellent series.
This book takes the best elements from the previous books and ramps them up to 11. This series is some of the best underated sci-fi out there. The McGuffin at the core of the book is interesting and still evolving, balancing sci-fi concepts with an Eldritch coating. This book strikes a perfect balance of political intrigue, world building, exploration, and epic battles. On top of an excellent story the narration is perfect. If I had one small complaint over the 30 hour run time I found some dialog to be slightly repetitive. Still one of my favorite books out there, and worth every hour.

Well worth the time
I rarely give five start reviews but this entire story has been amazing. I am probably a little biased because I have read a lot of bad stories lately. Not really bad but cheap and lazy. In a lot of others stories you can almost predict what is going to happen because of the way characters and plots are put together. It is like the writer is following some very generic and cliche story telling script and all of the pieces become predictable. These stories have a complexity and dialogue that is very engaging. The use of quotes and historical input is not used as story filler but rather it enhances the story and gives insight into the main characters essence. I never felt like the story was droning and I never sighed at the typical love interest cliche things in other stories or the cliche use of cursing. The relationships and language all worked together to tell a very good story.
Well done.

Excellent continuation
What a magnificent story and storyteller, couldn't ask for a more entertaining use of 30 hours. Samuel Roukin does an excellent narrative and I can't imagine a better voice for Hadrian.
If you've followed the series this far, then there is no need for summations, other than to say that the lives and times of Hadrian Marlowe just keep getting more interesting and irresistible. There's something for everybody within this space opera; with humanity losing the war, Hadrian still seeking answers to his visions, space warfare, gladiator fights, political deception, exploration of strange and forgotten planets, comical banter, intriguing new characters, old rivals becoming new allies, and those forgotten may reappear. Hadrian lives up to his name half-mortal, the man who can't die, only to put his life in more jeopardy. We think we know the end of his journey, but I wonder.

They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives - even the emperor himself - against Imperial orders. But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier. Fleeing his father and a future as a torturer, Hadrian finds himself stranded on a strange, backwater world.

The galaxy is burning. With the Cielcin united under one banner, the Sollan Empire stands alone after the betrayal of the Commonwealth. The Prophet-King of the Cielcin has sent its armies to burn the worlds of men, and worse, there are rumors … whispers that Hadrian Marlowe is dead, killed in the fighting. But it is not so. Story
The galaxy remembers Hadrian Marlowe as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky.

But not all the fighting is ended.

From the dawn of history onward, commanding the most powerful ship around has been a dream of admirals, sultans, emperors, kings, generalissimos, and sea captains everywhere. For what the intimidation factor alone doesn't achieve, a massive barrage from super-weapons probably will.
