Story
Winter in New York City: Amid sleet and snow, Doc Ford is at the Explorers Club with his new friend, former (and maybe current) British agent Sir James Montbard, researching a jungle expedition, and awaiting the arrival of an attractive US senator with whom Ford has become more than friendly. Her car pulls up, she starts to get out, and the unthinkable happens: an assassination attempt right before their eyes. Ford engages, critically injuring one of the attackers, but the senator vanishes.

A legendary charter captain and guide named Tootsie Barlow has come to Doc Ford, muttering about a curse. The members of his extended family have suffered a bizarre series of attacks, and Barlow is convinced it has something to do with a multiple murder in 1925, in which his family had a shameful part. Story
Marine biologist Doc Ford has been known to help his friends out of jams occasionally, but he's never faced a situation like this. His old pal Carl Fitzpatrick has been chasing sunken wrecks most of his life, but now he's run afoul of the Florida Division of Historical Resources. Its director, Leonard Nickelby, despises amateur archaeologists, which is bad enough, but now he and his young "assistant" have disappeared - along with Fitzpatrick's impounded cache of rare Spanish coins and the list of uncharted wreck sites Fitz spent decades putting together.

Randy Wayne White is acclaimed as "wildly inventive" (The San Diego Union-Tribune), "a wonderful writer" (Paul Theroux), "a fine storyteller" (Peter Matthiessen), and "the rightful heir to John D. In his fourth Doc Ford novel, he delivers a wicked thriller that sends government agent turned marine biologist Doc Ford into dangerous new waters as a Florida fishing dispute escalates into a deadly war that reaches across the ocean...

Marine biologist and former government agent Doc Ford is sure he's beyond the point of being surprised by his longtime pal Tomlinson's madcap tales of his misspent youth. But he's stunned anew when avowed bachelor Tomlinson reveals that as a younger man strapped for cash, he'd unwittingly fathered multiple children via for-profit sperm bank donations. Thanks to genealogy websites, Tomlinson's now-grown offspring have tracked him down, seeking answers about their roots...but Doc quickly grows suspicious that one of them might be planning something far more nefarious.

Story
When solitary marine biologist Doc Ford focused his telescope on the woman in the white boat, he didn't know his life was about to be capsized: that his conniving uncle, Tucker Gatrell, would discover the Fountain of Youth, that the National Enquirer would write about it, and that the law would beat down his door in search of three missing men. But Doc Ford is about to find these things out - the hard way. Because in the shadowy world of Southwest Florida, mysteries great and small have found the man to solve them.

Publisher's Summary
Doc Ford wrestles more than one kind of demon in this stunning novel from the New York Times-best-selling author. Many dangers lurk in the deep - the worst of them are human.
Thirty minutes into what should have been an easy, beginner-level dive in a remote Florida lake, the rim of a cave collapses, trapping two of Doc Ford's friends. Ford himself manages to escape and quickly surfaces to find help - but that's when his troubles only begin. Two men are waiting for him on the shore, and they are not the kind of men you want to meet at any time. Murderers and ex-cons, they're intent on diving to the bottom of the very deep lake and uncovering the remains of a legendary plane wreck there, supposedly loaded with Cuban treasury gold. Ford's expertise is just what they need. And if he doesn't want to help? He can die. His friends? They can die, too. In fact, they can die right now.
As the hours tick away, two mortal struggles unfold simultaneously, one above and one below. Neither outcome is certain, no man is safe. And in the deep shadow, only death awaits.

Doc Ford Does It Again
As a long time fan reading the Doc Ford stories, I thought I would try an audio version. The story itself was on par with most of the novels, while being a tad uneven. The story is simple enough, Doc and friends go scuba diving only to mixed up with a couple of killers looking for a means to escape the law. What transpires provides enough intrigue and drama to maintain your interest.
I found the narration clear enough, but voice of the narrator sounds just a little to folksy for my taste. For me, it just did not work for Doc Ford.

Hmmm, maybe abridged
If you could sum up Deep Shadow in three words, what would they be?
To much fill
If you’ve listened to books by Randy Wayne White before, how does this one compare?
5 out of a possible 10 compared to his other works.
Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
George is always awesome...
Any additional comments?
A good story, However I think the book was written and a publisher said... Mr. White we need more words... so the fill started.... Over all still a good listen...

boring
I think to enjoy this book at all, you have to be a Doc Ford fan AND a scuba diver. I am both and I found this book boring. It might have been an ok short story. But there's just not enough of anything there for it to be a good book. For someone who anxiously awaits every Randy Wayne White book, I was disappointed.

Paid by the word
I've bought quite a few Doc Ford novels on audio books. The early ones were quite good but then there is a gap where there aren't any audio versions of the books. After they resume, they have a much larger emphasis on detailing Doc Ford as an obvious government agent & killer, more emphasis on violence and are extremely slow moving and repetitive. I may try one more, but I only made it halfway through this one. Too bad. I quite like you early ones.

Huge disappointment
This book could have been half as long and still been boring and predictable. I have listened to all of the prior books in the Doc Ford series. This badly needed editing and in fact could have been nothing more than an interesting scene in another book. It was way to predictable and repetitive.
