As a living descendant of Artemis the Huntress, private investigator Nikki Glass knows how to track someone down. But when an Oracle shows up, warning the Descendants about wild dog attacks in Washington, D.C., Nikki is afraid it might be a trap. The Olympians believe the "dogs" are really jackals, controlled by a blood-crazed descendant of the Egyptian death-god Anubis.

Whatever. If Nikki hopes to muzzle Dogboy, she's got to catch him in the act. But when she stakes out a local cemetery, she ends up face-to-snout with a snarling pack of shadow-jackals whose bite is worse than their bark. These hellhounds are deadly - even for an immortal like Nikki. "Dog" spelled backward may be "god", but that won't stop Nikki from teaching these old gods some new tricks. Like playing dead.

Yeah, pretty good follow up. Not quite as strong as the first, but still good. I get a little annoyed when we have to listen to too much whiny internal turmoil that is OBVIOUS to the reader how it will turn out. I can't say too much about it because it's at the end of the book. But I found myself doing a LOT of eye rolls at her inner dialogue, choices and hopes that someone will save her. It was just weird. That aside, I enjoyed the book, plot and characters and will give the next book a chance.

Decent

This is a fantastic new series, and *SPOILER ALERT* I can't wait to see what happens between Nikki and Jamal. Yum.

Where does Deadly Descendant rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very high.

What did you like best about this story?

Excellent follow-up to the first book. I loved the character development. Nikki doesn't really like her situation but is adapting and starting to build some real relationships with the others in the mansion. Anderson creeps me right the hell out but in the best possible way. He's one of the most interesting "good guys" that I've seen in this genre. Really, he's only good relative to the alternative. There are a few scenes in Deadly Descendant where we see more of the less-human side of him than we did in the first book and it adds some more depth to his character, yet he's human enough to like having Nikki around because he knows that he can trust her with his biggest secret and because she knows, he can be himself around her. It's not a romantic relationship but it's an interesting and complex one, particularly in the way that it affects Anderson's relationship with his own wife, and it is a large part of what will keep me reading this series.

What about Sophie Eastlake’s performance did you like?

She is very consistent with the character voices and they match the characters very well. I find that listening to a well-narrated audiobook like this one adds to the story. Having read the book, it's great to have character voices associated with it when I re-read it after listening to the audiobook.

Loved It, Performance Really Adds To The Story

I liked the first book. This one I didn't connect with. The story wasn't too exciting. The character development wasn't there. Infact I felt more of a disconnect with characters. I really liked Anderson but in this book he seemed constantly angry and more of a punisher. The romance was not very steamy nor romantic. It felt like she liked him because he was there and mean to her. That lead me to dislike the main character, doesn't she have self respect!? I do not plan to continue the series after this.
