Publisher's Summary

A new home, a new marriage, a new family. It's a lot to sort out. But before medicolegal death investigator Mattie can smooth out the unexpected chaos of her new life, duty calls. At the local ER, a battered and bruised teenage girl has been brought in by a mysterious man who claimed she'd fallen out of a car. The staff is suspicious, but while they attend to the teenager, the unidentified man slips out. Then the girl dies, but not before informing social worker Hildy Schneider that the man had her little sister as well.

Mattie's exam reveals forensic evidence of long-term IV drug use and physical abuse, findings consistent with Hildy's suspicion that the girl was a victim of human trafficking. They are able to confirm her identity as a teen who went missing six months ago, along with her sister - facts that are deeply unsettling to Mattie, who now shares a home with her husband's teenaged daughter.

Working closely with Hildy and homicide detectives, including her husband Steve Hurley, Mattie must delve into a dark underworld to stop the ruthless trafficking of human lives - before it's too late for another young girl...

Critic Reviews

“A puzzler of a mystery. Annelise Ryan has created a smart and saucy heroine in Mattie Winston…What a thrill ride!” (New York Times best-selling author Jenn McKinlay)

Not sure what happened

I’ve read or listened to every book in the series. This one was mediocre at best. I was especially put off by the food poisoning incident and the excessive description of the bodily results. Completely unnecessary and borderline juvenile. Not sure I will use an Audible Credit for any future books in the series.

Not so much

She keeps talking about how big Marty is but when she is confronted by a sick old lady she cowers and gets caught. You can’t say that was for the story because she was already sick with food poisoning and shot and neither of them slowed her down one little bit. Either she is an Amazon queen or not, can’t be both.

I Love Maddie Winston

I love the humor in these books. This is no exception, although the insistence on reciting details from past stories is irritating and Jorjeana Marie’s acting is much better than her pronunciation. (I love her Wisconsin accents!)

NO MYSTERY, NOT A THRILLER, NOTHING OUTSTANDING !

Ordered this hoping it would be a good mystery.....it took me three days of listening to come to the conclusion it was not a good listen, but felt I had kept it to long to return.......therefore I continued to listen ...my assumption did not change...... The plot sounded interesting....human trafficking....encouraged me it would get better.....it didn't....the story line was and continued to be tedious and boring....... Wasted a credit...ugh !

Better and Better

This series improves with every book. I wait impatiently for the next installment. The subject matter was presented so skillfully, and sensitively.

Needs editing

This book needs a good editor. Far too much time spent Home filling out background story lines. Too much time Spent on unnecessary detail about stomach upset And diarrhoea . Very good narrator
