Michael Valentine, veteran and former member of an elite private military company, has been recruited by the government to conduct a secret counter-terror operation in the Persian Gulf nation of Zubara. The unit is called Dead Six. Their mission is to take the fight to the enemy and not get caught. Lorenzo, assassin and thief extraordinaire, is being blackmailed by the world's most vicious crime lord. His team has to infiltrate the Zubaran terrorist network and pull off an impossible heist or his family will die. When Dead Six compromises his objective, Lorenzo has a new job: Find and kill Valentine. As allegiances are betrayed and the nation descends into a bloody civil war, Lorenzo and Valentine must face off. Two men. Two missions. Only one will win.

Having read other works by Larry Correia, I expected anti-government rhetoric, machismo, and detailed descriptions of weapons, but this book brought in a new element, and that was a group of protagonists so despicable that you wanted them to get killed as much as the bad guys. Having a hero that is tainted is not a new concept, but in this case, mercenaries with a history of murder, extortion, and war crimes made it hard to cheer on the main characters.

The narration was also a bit odd. It took a while for me to understand the method being used by Mr. Pinochet. Over all though, I felt it could have been read at a faster pace.

In summary, the book did entertain me and it wasn't a wasted credit. I would place this in the middle of the "to read" list if you enjoy Larry Correia's other works.

Characters that are very hard to like

total page-turning action in all three books. great characters, and an amazing performance by Bronson Pinchot. i.loved. it.

this series is a must-read

This story is well written but is a little hard to follow listening to. This is especially true at the end where the two main characters (both written in the first person) converse quite a bit.

Bronson Pinchot does a very good job though and is very entertaining especially when performing the villain.

Little hard to follow

Two parallel stories that confused me at first. for about a third of the book! I thought one of the stories was a flash back. The two main characters were very similar in personality and how the narrator voiced them.

The story had lots of shooting but for the most part the characters survived by there skill and not just dumb luck. I recommend this for those that like special forces stories.

Lots of killing!

The story is as expected when Larry Correia is involved - Guns, explosions and a big military nut WHO is more intelligent than expected.

... but somehow it starts all wrong. It does not quite connect until Lorenzo and Valentine meet for the first time, from then on the story is exciting, fun and full of all that I love about the stories written by Larry.

The narration is more than just good. He is able to do all the voices, and really apply depth to all of the characters. Even though I felt 'meh' about the story I have invested in book two - all because of the second part and the narration.

Overall good listen/read.

Second half of story is excellent, first not so
