A Soul Is a Terrible Thing to Waste!

In the second book in the Dead Jack series, the zombie detective hits rock bottom, bingeing on fairy dust and formaldehyde 24/7. Reluctantly, he sets out with a fellow zombie, the narcissistic Garry, to find his long-lost soul. But a new threat emerges: a neo-Nazi group that hunts down the depressed corpse, believing his sidekick Oswald has the power to capture all the souls in Pandemonium. Again, the wicked world needs saving, but this time can Jack also save himself?

Such a fun listen!

This book is delightful and fun! The story takes twists and turns so it isn’t predictable. I really love not being forced to listen to sexual activity. It is difficult for me to find a good book for that reason, I know I sound prudish but there you go. The saddest part is looking for another book as fun as this one. Any suggestions?

Second verse same as the first

For free, this is an okay listen. But, just like the first book, it’s shallow and scattershot.
Zombie P.I. Dead Jack mucks about, snorting dust and uttering awkward “for fooksakes” as he quests for the key to reviving humunculus Oswald, an “enigma wrapped in a marshmallow.” The author throws in a hodgepodge of creatures and half-baked comedic bits, like Mad Libs on acid.

Find a clue by tonguing a snake? Why not? A Nazi Island of Dr Moreau, because why? Just because. Skeleton with a bad hair-piece? Oh, the hair-ball jokes that will flow!

The Nazi gimmick is again used to signal who the bad guys are, because giving them backstories, clever dialogue or menace is too much work. They dress in snazzy Nazi attire, burn books, and plot to take over the world (or at least Pandemonium)… just because. They’re all nameless redshirts, except for the single caricature of Elsa, who’s motivation is simply depravity.

As long as you don’t expect meaty stories or characters with depth, and can handle clunky insertions of “arse” and “fook” without any other Irish or accent, there are a few fun bits (Lucifer is played with smarmy relish, for one). This contains comic-level gore, raunchy but vague innuendo, and a six foot pixie wreaking havoc with an attitude and her hammer.

Random thought- is it just me, or is there a whole bunch of Indiana Jones parallels?
-Jack’s fedora
-Jack getting punched by a Marion-like gal because of his past errors
-Jack in depression over a lost Marion-like friend … who isn’t really lost
-Jack going undercover at a Nazi book burning
-A crazy Nazi named Elsa encouraging him to join the cause

Loved it, but too short.

My only complaint is that it wasn't as long as I wanted it to be. Loved every minute of it though.

Pretty boring

I honestly barely made it through this. I just couldn't find myself getting into it and it kind of felt randomly cobbled together and disjointed. The performance was not that great either.

dead jack and the soul catcher

What a fantastic surprise! I tried this book only because it came free as part of my package and I am so glad I did. Extremely well written, full of expression and humour with a great story line. The narrator choice was perfect! would recommend to anyone looking for a light hearted listen
