Some say that true evil never dies, it merely lies dormant, awaiting the next opportunity to rise from its dark lair and visit itself upon humankind again. Jack Hunger, a cop in Lee County, Florida, never gave it much thought. He purchased the 20-year-old Pentax K1000 camera at a perfectly respectable thrift store, and it was to be the beginning of a new hobby for the reclusive crime scene photographer.

Publisher's Summary
A phone call to his sister leads Flex Sheridan into a nightmare and a quest to save his family from a new, horrifying epidemic that's turning humans into zombies. As he makes his way from Georgia to Gainesville, Florida and back, he picks up old and new friends and survivors. Flex reconnects with perhaps the strongest woman he's ever known, Gem Cardoza, his former girlfriend. Together they take his six-year-old niece Trina - the only uninfected survivor of his sister's famiy - and his infected sister Jamie, and make a run from central Florida back to his isolated Georgia home.
As they head north, they encounter another uninfected, Hemphill "Hemp" Chatsworth. Hemp is British and extremely smart. He holds a biology degree with a major in epidemiology, as well as a degree in mechanical engineering, both of which this group will need. Along with the crossbow-wielding Charlene "Charlie" Sanders and a pregnant Great Pyrenees dog, this small group uses street smarts and technology to defend against the new "Abnormals" that walk the earth. But Hemp is also compelled to learn how they got this way, and if possible, how to reverse the condition and save Flex's sister. So grab your machine gun and take a ride in their fortified vehicles and mobile lab; you're going to want these people on your side when the dead hunger....

A different Z makes this one hell of a ride
I loved the book, now listening to the story narrated by the author himself was an even bigger treat. It begins with Flex Sherradin talking to his sister who is not feeling well when he hears a terrible scream, he jumps ito his Suburban and heads down to Florida but he is more than four hours away and having to stop and gas up several times does nothing to alleviate the fear building inside of him. Along the way, he is so caught up in trying to get to his sister that he misses several clues as to what is happening to the world around him. Arriving, what he feared most is affirmed but in the most horrific of ways. His sister has turned into a crazed cannibal, his brother in law is dead/eaten and one of his nieces has drowned in her attempt to get away from her mother. To help in his hour of need, Gem, his soul mate, arrive. Gem herself has also survived an attack from a loved one but her one thought is to get to Flex as soon as possible. They don't know what is happening, only that they need to protect Trina, Flex's niece. They search for weapons in a police station were they find Hemp, a Britsh scientiest, who will be instrumental in their war agains the walking dead. They also find Charlie, a young woman who had taken refuge in a hospital and is by no means helpless having killed a few of the dead with a cross bow. Forming a close knit group as they make the return to Flex's home. Gem and Charlie are anything but helpless as they both fight along side Flex and Hemp. A quick stop to the CDS (possible spoilers)where they find a couple of people still alive and rescue several people that the undead are storing for food. These are unlike any Z's that have been written about which is what makes this storyline unique. If you have read the book, you will enjoy the narration by the author himself. If you have not, you will still enjoy it as new discoveries are made about the Z's and since the author is the narrator, it is personal on many levels. Who better to tell the story then the man who penned it. I look forward to re-listening to the the rest of the series now more than ever.

What a great, entertaining "abnormals" story! The characters are fleshed out well, and I appreciate the strong female characters who aren't stupid and weepy. I enjoyed the narration by the author--it's the first time I listened to this book, so I can't compare the original narration to this.

Brilliant Zombie Book
Loved listening to this audio book. There is so much more to this book than a standard zombie brain hungry storyline, there is science behind it which really helped to keep me enthralled. Couldn't stop listening and cant wait to start the next.
I was a little unsure when I brought this book that it was the first in the series as the dates for them on audible dont correlate, I think this is because the author Eric has re recorded them so dont let the dates put you off, this is the first book in the series.
Eric narrates it so well (I brought this book because I love his narration on other books I have listened to) he captures each character so well and has a great story telling voice! He definitely made the right choice to record them himself.
Such a good book, lots of action, some heartfelt moments, loads of zombies and weapons.
