:-( Oh this is torture! BAD reader!!

I had to FORCE myself to listen to this whole book because I LOVE this series! Story is awesome, reader is horrible! He would be PERFECT reading Charles Dickens but not a romance story. He gives the main character the voice of an OLD movie version of Dracula. This was torture! I hope he's not reading any more of this series. :-( I LOVE my Carpathians, they can't be portrayed like this. This series is unique because you can start anywhere, but if you start at book 1 and read in order you have a better understanding of the people, but if you only want a quick read you don't HAVE to read the whole series to get a great story!

Good book but narrator is ponderous

I have been listening to this series in order and have enjoyed every book and narrator until Dark Symphony. The performance of the narrator is slow and ponderous. Byron sounds like a dull-witted, stereotypic Transylvanian. This was so annoying, I purchased the paperback to read, instead of finishing the audiobook. I strongly recommend listening to the audio samples before purchasing this audiobook or any remaining in the series by the same narrator (Destiny, Secret, Demon, Celebration, Possession). Personally, I am going to read the books in print.

Great Book...please get rid of the narrator

I just LOVE this series. However...Is it me???? I have hated this narrator for the last 5 books. He's droll. Irritating and his female voices bite. I only bought this book after listening to the last 4 by this narrator because Audible has the narrator listed as Kevin Free. Goodness was I freaked out when I heard that same cruddy voice. Shame on me for not listening to the sample.

Winner

I've been reading this series in order, so I ignored the bad critiques on the narrator. I'm glad I did, as I didn't find him a bad reader at all. Not one of the very best, but certainly I've heard many that were far worse. I found the listening experience pleasant. The book itself had some twists that were quite different from other books in the series, and I found that entertaining. What I could not understand was why this book is priced at almost twice what most of the books in this series of a similar length are priced.

The world worst narrator

I love all the storylines in the dark series but listening to this narrator was like having my teeth pulled.

Good story - melodramatic narrator

I truly enjoyed Feehan's story; but this narrator must have heard he was reading a 'vampire' book, and decided to channel Bela Lugosi. He was one step away from "I vant to suck your bloooood." A different narrator - with a more modern voice for our hero - would have definitely made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience.

Enjoyed the characters - had difficulty at times keeping them straight (narrator); but found a contemporary Carpathian Feehan introduced here particularly refreshing.

Couldn't finish the book

When a narrator puts me to sleep there's a problem. There was no depth to this and I found myself wondering if the book would 'go' anywhere. Don't get me wrong, I love the Dark series but between the extremely poor pacing in this one AND the narrator's slow and ponderous method, I deleted the book from my player after listening to the first half.

At least it's not read by Juanita Parker

My wife and I are making progress through this series and I don't understand the narrator complaints in the reviews. The Carpathian men in these stories are hundreds and sometimes thousands of years old, yet they are expected to sound English? I haven't liked any of Juanita Parker's performances and what she did to Lucian in "Dark Guardian" was almost a sin. None of the women readers have even attempted to make the men sound like what they are, ancients from Eastern Europe. This is only the second male reading and I hope to hear more.

Who Done It!

Christine Feehans books are remarkable. They combine imagery, emotion, complexity, and darkness in such a loving way. There is no other for me that can write a paranormal book this way all her books including this one are intriguing. Antoinetta and Byron are compeling characters who do not let adversity stand in their way. The ancient language and the code of natural healing along with the idea of a community coming together almost seems like something we should emmulate today. I only wish that men were as caring and concerned as Feehan's character are but not as bossy and controlling. Yet Feehan is not stingy in the sexual erotic area. These couples are highly sexual! They might even make you quiet hot under the collar. The stories all generally follow the same plot with some variations but it's always nice to see what new setting or situation is going on. Each book links them in some way to the previous ones but Feehan does not dwell too much on the previous characters unless it is in some way an integral part of the story. Her books are always good reads.

Excellent

Byron, a Carpathian male and hunter of the vampire follows the sound of compelling music to Italy. There he discovers his lifemate, Antoinetta Scarletti, heiress to the great Scarletti fortune. A renowned concert pianist, Antoinetta is the glue that holds the Scarletti family together. Blinded in an explosion that killed her parents, she nevertheless stands to run the family shipping business.

Antoinetta lives in the palazzo della morte, the palace of death. There, like her ancestors, she finds someone wants her dead. Antoinetta has a few secrets of her own and together, Byron and Antoinetta face the killers and one out of control Carpathian youth.

This was a highly entertaining listen I found myself laughing out loud often and thoroughly enjoyed the story as a whole. I highly recommend this story in particular and the Dark series as a whole.
