Story
Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can't tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city itself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal-registration act, times haven't been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay for a bit, and let the mortals calm down. But that's when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black - and things really start getting ugly.

Merit, Chicago's newest vampire, is learning how to play well with others. Other supernaturals, that is. Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene - and to spy for the vamps while she's at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan's offering some steamy one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.

"Vampires in Chicago! You'd think headlines like that would have provoked the fine citizens of the Windy City to take up arms against us bloodsucking fiends. Instead, 10 months later, we're enjoying a celebrity status reserved for the Hollywood elite - fending off paparazzi only slightly less dangerous than cross- and stake-wielding slayers. Don't get me wrong. Joe Public isn't exactly thrilled to be living side-by-side with the undead, but at least they haven't stormed the castle...yet."

But after a specter begins haunting Cadogan House - and targeting vampires - they realize they're being taunted by an altogether different sort of monster. Publisher's Summary
A vampire never gets old, but neither do his enemies.
When a figure from Ethan's dark past makes a splashy debut in Chicago, Merit and her master don't know whether he's friend or foe. But they'll have to figure it out soon because trouble is brewing in the Windy City.
At an exclusive society soirée attended by the upper echelons of the human and supernatural worlds, Merit and Ethan barely stop the assassination of a guest. When the target turns out to be a shady businessman with a criminal edge, Merit suspects a human vendetta. But the assassins have fangs.
The connections to Chicago's Houses go deeper than Merit knows, and one wrong move could be her last.

Another Chicagoland Winner
I love this series...it's well written, smart, intelligent and well crafted. You would think after this many books, the stories would begin to get stale or stilted...well, wrong. Ms Neill continues to develop Merit and Ethan as a power couple, to challenge their commitment and love and obviously prepare them for their future together. Don't miss it. Sophie Eastlake is a genius when it comes to narrating all of the wonderfully developed characters. It's a fun and very strong book.

'Sentinel, Be Still'.... Yes, Liege, Anytime....
Would you consider the audio edition of Dark Debt to be better than the print version?
I am on the fence about that. This is my first listen to the audio of this series. Emmm, I think I would have preferred a better actor for Ethan. He is so debonair, and sexy. That voice did not do him justice. In any case tht did not take away for my love for this series. I love it. It is chuckful of action.
What other book might you compare Dark Debt to and why?
Maybe Jeannine Frost 'Night Huntress' series. Yeah another Cat and Bones is welcomed.
Have you listened to any of Sophie Eastlake’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, this is my first listen to the actor.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The sex scenes between Ethan and Merit, and also when they were in an accident.

I like the story line but it seems that the author needs to study more on vampires. One on one a vampire will win against a human every time and since when does a vampire fear a human You maid the characters too human. And they are not Vamps are powerful beings. Not one that cowers

A little Disappointed
Would you listen to Dark Debt again? Why?
No
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dark Debt?
In a bad way - Merit is running after a human and barely keeping up then losing him? Vampire speed vs. Human speed? Small Details like this throughout the book make you go "WHAT?"
Which character – as performed by Sophie Eastlake – was your favorite?
Merit
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No
Any additional comments?
Hope the next one is better with details.

Dark Debt
Holy Wow,
This book is crazy with the excitement. So much happens Merit first can now been called as where before she couldn’t. That is new and freaky especially for her.
Ethan has to confront his past in a big way and then learn to deal with it in ways we are only just learning about.
I love that even though everything is happening and it’s freaking both Merit and Ethan out they still had level heads. Ethan though he might not like it knew that Merit needed some space after what is happening to her. And yes he might be hurt that she isn’t running to him but he also understands.
I loved the wedding! Their vows had me tearing up a little. (I am not saying who the bride and groom were if you know, you know ;) but no spoilers.)

love the series
I don't like that the vampires are so weak in this series vampires are supposed to be faster and stronger than humans in this series humans are faster and are on the same strength level as vampires kind of throws the story off and keeps the series from being one of my favorites
