"I don't want to be alone tonight."
Caroline Lake can hardly believe she would ever say these words to someone she'd never met before. When a tall, dark stranger arrives wanting to rent a room in her beautiful empty shell of a mansion, she hesitates. Though she is in dire financial straits, the man looks dangerous - dangerously sexy. She's overwhelmed by the desire he sparks in her - hotter than anything she's ever felt before - making her ache to experience his sensuous touch. But who is this armed and mysterious man with danger following in his wake? He's not who she thinks he is...
Jack Prescott has wanted Caroline forever. He has spent the past 12 years dreaming of her, desiring her, while fighting in some of the worst hellholes on earth. Now he's back, with 20 million dollars in blood diamonds and a relentless enemy stalking him. But this time Jack's determined that nothing will stop him from finally making Caroline his.

The action adventure part of the plot progresses quickly and the writing shows parallel timeframes for several of the involved characters. If you don’t mind changing point of view and location, it’s a nice pace between what’s happening in the romance arena versus the bad guys. Some writers don’t handle P O V changes like this well, but this worked for me.
The resolution part is where I feel cheated. The author told us, in careful detail, about a homeless woman who liked chocolate, about a guy on guard duty eager to get home to his girl, and we even got good snapshots of motive, personality, character evolution for other bit players.
It’s clear that the writer is able to develop and grow the personalities in this book. For reasons unknown, that skill isn’t used to show us anything after the dust settles. We don’t even see the dust settle, tbh. There is no heartfelt reunion, no catching up, nothing about resolving who the main characters were to each other in the past to who they become to each other or where they go from here, or even if they are able to achieve their few stated goals.
The romantic interests don’t get any kind of agreed-upon plan to go forward. The sex writing is good, and points for not sounding like most romances, but if anyone wants to hear about plans for a happily ever after as well as sexual compatibility and the clear signs of the beginning emotional awareness as pains in their chests (I think that’s as close to saying the word “love” as this book gets), don’t hold your breath. They don’t even say they’re seeing each other before the book stops. They have internal thoughts about a few nice plans, but we don’t see them moving in that direction.
I would have happily missed out on the details about other characters or settings if I could have gotten some more info about the two love interests and how they possibly end up together with any kind of certainty. I don’t need to know who is going bald, how good an information broker’s security is, how much someone enjoyed riding first class, etc. if I the same amount of care isn’t given to the actual ending of the book.
I honestly started wondering if this was written to a deadline and the author ran out of time.
It ends without showing much. Weird.
