Interesting and Engaging Story

Danger Close is the 3rd book in the Mourningkill Series written by Molly Briar. It centers around Cobra, a former spy/secret agent who is now retired and is connected to some type of off the books domestic defense agency. It also follows Teri, Cobra's ex-wife, who has faced so many hardships in the last 30 years of her life that she has become a shell of a person who is doing her best to just survive. They reconnect when Cobra tracks her down so that she will attend their daughters wedding, despite there being animosity between mother and daughter. There are many twists, turns, and surprises throughout the story, but at its core, this is a love story with a strong theme of survival. We see glimpses into Cobra and Teri's pasts both together and apart in different parts of the book, and we are able to learn how far Teri is willing to go to protect her child as well as what Cobra feels that he needs to do to protect the woman that he has loved for decades.


I listened to the duet narration audiobook, which is narrated by PG Hammock, and the author herself, Molly Briar. The narration itself was good, especially once I was able to get used to the French accent that the FMC has. As I listened, it appeared that the female narrator was very good at distinguishing between the various characters that she was voicing, and I appreciated her range of accents. The male narrator also was able to ensure that the listener was able to tell that a different character was speaking, but many of his characters appeared to have similar backgrounds, so their voices weren't as important to differentiate between.


Overall the story was complex, it drew me in, and I felt for Teri especially, the more that I learned about what she had faced in her past. There were some pieces that were slightly repetitive, but also relevant to the story in multiple parts, so it was understandable. It was also a little unclear what Cobra actually does at this point, since he stated multiple times that he was retired, but obviously is still doing some work with other former agents and military members.


While the description does state that the book can be read as a stand-alone, there were references to things that likely happened in previous books, so the reader should be aware of potential spoilers. There are also multiple references to abuse in many forms, so the reader should be aware of their personal triggers prior to diving in to this book. Healing oneself from the level of trauma that Teri faced for so many years does not happen quickly or easily, and I appreciated the authors acknowledgement of that fact.


In general, I enjoyed listening to Danger Close, and would be interested in starting from the beginning of the series to get a better idea of the characters in this story. I found the reveal of who the bad guy actually was to be surprising, and there were absolutely events that I did not see coming, especially towards the end of the story itself. I personally loved the epilogue, and was pleased with the HEA that the characters appear to be making progress towards every day.

Emotional Story - Second Chance

I read this book a bit ago and liked it. It was an emotional read and I felt the struggle and heartbreak from Teri and the frustration from Cobra.

The audio brought this to another level. I liked the story even more in audio. The narrators were fantastic and I really felt more empathy for Teri and more frustration toward Cobra, cause that guy, lol smh. Clueless sometimes.

Teri and Cobra have a very unconventional road to their HEA and though they find happiness the years of trauma Teri endured will always be a shadow Cobra holds at bay. I loved his devotion to Teri from the moment of their reconnection, and Teri’s journey to trust and believe in her own happiness is something I rooted for at the get go.

I loved the cast of characters, the military family, the blood family and how they tied into the plot and helped Teri and Cobra. The story sucks you in as you just have to know what is going on with Teri, especially seeing how she acts in Fire for Effect toward her daughter (Book 1).

The emotion, suspense and action in the book is all well balanced. Can’t wait for the next in the series!

Teri and Cobra

This book as packed full of action, danger, heartbreak, and healing. Molly always does such a great job luring you in and keeping you captivated every time.

After 30 years apart, Teri and Cobra are reunited at the daughter’s wedding, but of course it quickly turns dangerous. There are so many secrets that will soon be uncovered. Teri has dealt with a lot and she never told Cobra. There were several points where I’d get frustrated that she just wouldn’t open up and tell him things. Cobra is very possessive and obsessive and he does not give up. He will protect those he loves.

You can feel the emotions of the characters in this book. A love that has lasted over 30 years is raw and deep, you can’t help but root for them.

PG Hammond and Molly Briar did such a beautiful job bringing these characters to life. Once I started, I was not able to stop, I was invested and needed to know. They gave them a voice that was relatable and easy to follow along even though it’s fast paced.

Second chance, my wife

This a romantic suspense, second chance with swoony "my wife" moments. I felt the yearning and love these two had for each other, keeping distance even though they share a daughter.

Second Chance Romance with Emotional Punch

Hello Daddy Cobra... It has been several days since I finished Danger Close and I am still struggling to find the words to explain how much I loved this book.

Having read previous Molly Briar books I knew that there would be this wonderful melding between character arcs and a plot filled with action, suspense, a little humor, and lots of steam. What I wasn't expecting was to be bawling my eyes out.

As much as I want Cobra for myself, no one could stand in the way of the second chance arc between Teri and Cobra. It gritty and healing; it was perfect. That isn't to say that there wasn't a lot of secrets and twists that they had to survive, because there was. Danger Close is easily one of my top five favorite reads in the Briarverse.

If the book itself was tearjerker then the audio version is soul ripping. The narrators captured the nuances of the emotions and were able to deliver these beautiful and devastating scenes. Honestly this may be one of the most emotionally impactful romances I’ve ever listened to.
