In this explosive best seller, the United States and the Soviet Union are poised on the brink of Armageddon. Glasnost has failed, Russia is economically desperate, and Gorbachev's successor has launched the first strike in what may become World War III. Only one man knows the full extent of the impending horror - a CIA operative trapped in the Kremlin.

Written by a former Marine Corps pilot, DEFCON One is a blistering scenario of men and war - exciting, tense, and frighteningly real.

It takes a while to get used to the narrator and the story. But in the end, this is a must read if you want insight into human behavior and the tenuous nature of our existence. It takes one person to change humanity. Even though this book was written in 1989 the message is relevant, and the action will keep you listening. It can make you think if you let it.

You have to look deeper at this one...

Growing up during the Cold War made this a chilling reminder of those days. Story kept me on the edge of my seat. If you were born after 1980 you won’t get it.

Chilling

Just finished listening to this book. Would have given it 10 stars, but the stars don't go up that far.
I was on the edge of my seat! The writer was excellent, he knows his stuff.
The performance was outstanding! Keith Szarabajka really held your attention throughout the book with his different voices. He made you forget that you were listening to a book, instead you felt he was next to you conversing and telling you what happened. The story pulled you in and never let go. I found myself shouting "Don't do it! Don't do" and yelling other comments throughout the book. I was practically in tears and praying it would not be so.
You HAVE GOT TO hear this book! You will not be disappointed. This book gives you plenty of food for thought & rightly frightens you at the thought of DEFCON One.

Better than a movie.

This was the most realistic story I’ve ever heard. I was tense and completely drawn in to the action.

Edge of my seat.....

Lots of events but limited character development overall. For the most part I did enjoy this and chose it to listen to over two 5.5 hour flights. I do appreciate that it was quick moving and seemed technically accurate to the time.

Feels short for the subject matter yet exciting
