Cursed

This was a morbidly pleasant surprise for a debut novella. It jumps straight into the creepiness with elements of Ringu and Friday the 13th-the series. It rolls through straight to the end with the unease of a well crafted story. I look forward to reading more from Leigh. Thanks for the entertainment!

Creepy!

I’ve seen so many reviews for this book, and every single one of them have been positive. Now let me add to the hype because this book is excellent!

Leigh puts a new twist on the cursed object story, and she rips your heart out in the process. This book is creepy as hell. It’s definitely going to stick with me.

The narrator does a nice job of adding to the dread of the story. Highly recommend this one!

Hair-Raising and creepy!

“An overwhelming smell of death and decay enveloped his senses, and he could feel his stomach roil in response. She whispered in his ear, murmuring in hushed tones and foreign tongue.”

Never in my life have I feared boxes or hair… until now! This book is very much alive in my brain days after finishing it. I fear traversing the dark hallway and staircase that separates me from the bathroom, the kitchen, escape. I fear the strands of long dark hair that pop up in all the strangest places. I fear the sounds I can’t explain. Imagine going to work one day, doing your job and then nothing is ever the same again. Fear fills your veins and paranoia coats your throat. If movies like THE GRUDGE, THE RING OR JU-ON had you on the edge of your seat, this one will send you running for the hills… and back real fast because hell noooo you can’t be alone! Fantastic!

Terrifying

I'm so creeped out. First, my husband isn't gonna ever complain about finding my hair ever again. Second, a hair tickled my face while I was listening and I smacked like I went through a spider web. This one actually scared me which doesn't ever happen.

No good deed goes unpunished

I took some extra time working around the house in order to finish this. Leigh Kenny nails this haunted object trope.
This is genuinely scary at times. It gets dark and tense. You can literally feel the suspense closing in on you.
The main character, Curtis, is such a nice guy and you just root for him throughout. The story sucks you in right from the beginning and doesn’t let go, even after it ends. Maybe especially after it ends. The book hangover lingers still and I finished the book yesterday morning.

Immediately into the horror

Leigh Kenny has written a fantastic horror short (?)/novel? I’ve seen it compared to The Ring, and I see the similarities but I love this so much better.
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator wasn’t my favorite at the beginning, but it quickly becomes clear he is the perfect choice.
It’s a creepy read (listen) with some moments of levity, at least IMO. My favorite part that made me chuckle was an adult who got spooked and ran to hide under his covers. It was just so well done and ridiculous to think of an adult doing this.
I’m going to grab a physical copy. This is a new favorite of mine.

Be Careful What You Accept From Strangers

Cursed by Leigh Kenny is impressive for a debut novel. She taps into one of humanity’s biggest fears—something evil stealing control of our lives. This isn’t a new theme in horror, but she does a magnificent job of amplifying the tension and creep factor, keeping readers interested and involved. Character development was rich, creating a strong investment in Curtis and the people in his life. That investment is where the author’s voice begins to shine. Then, she lures us in with an emotional journey through more than fear, offering love, desperation, selflessness, and the inevitability of a cursed fate. This is a quick, exciting read that kept me thinking: what would I do in that situation? I enjoyed every minute of this stress-inducing horror novel!

Would make a good episode of Tales from the Crypt

A haunted box ruins lives! This was a fun little tale of horror. The main character makes some wildly bad choices after he realizes he’s cursed, and that took me out of the story a bit. Otherwise very good narration and characterization.
