Publisher's Summary

Winner, 2017 APA Audie Awards - Thriller/Suspense

The toughest cases are the ones that hit close to home.

When his cousin is accused of a heinous crime, Alex Cross returns to his North Carolina hometown for the first time in more than three decades. As he tries to prove his cousin's innocence in a town where everyone seems to be on the take, Cross unearths a family secret that forces him to question everything he's ever known.

Chasing a ghost he believed was long dead, Cross gets pulled into a case that has local cops scratching their heads and needing his help: a grisly string of socialite murders. Now he's hot on the trail of both a brutal killer and the truth about his own past - and the answers he finds might be fatal.

No way to improve on this book

Rarely does a book come along that keeps the momentum for the reader on high throughout the book from beginning to end, but this one does. It is fabulous! book that allows for mystery to meet mystery again & again. And the narration is great too. It has something for everyone to enjoy, ponder over, guess & then guess agin & still the end will still blow the mind. Bravo James Patterson, Bravo

Possibly the best one yet!!

I have loved Alex Cross since the very first book, and this one is no exception... When Cross goes “home” again after many years because a cousin is on trial for the heinous murder of a child, not only does he wind up solving the crime and finding the real killer, but he also finds himself. There are many twists in this tale, and the very last one made me cry. Excellent read!! 5+ stars.

Suspenseful

This book kept you on your toes. You could not even predict the end no matter how well you follow it. It was a twister of a roller coaster ride.

What did you like best about this story?

It was a new twist to Alex revisiting his roots and his hometown

Which character – as performed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson – was your favorite?

Alex Cross and all of the main characters . First time I have listed to Ruben and will not be the last

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely , I could not wait to get in my car and turn it on. And to be honest I was late several times coming back from lunch ,because of this book .... :)

Any additional comments?

Don't get the some of the reviews on this book from other people . I am an Audio book Junkie and almost didn't get this book. Everything about this book was fantastic including the narrator :) Enjoy and get it today.... I do not normally give five stars , but this is worth it .

Worst Mismatch Between Character & Narrator

Would you try another book from James Patterson and/or Ruben Santiago-Hudson?

Absolutely, I would read another James Patterson Book. I guess there was a shortage of available reader to put Ruben's voice as Alex Cross. A true mismatch.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

As a narrator I'm sure Rubin is fine, sadly he was not the right match for this character.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

It sparked a request for a refund shortly after I started listening. What a disappointment.

All the qualities that I don't like

Patterson is OK from a literary perspective, but I hate 1) noises that aren't part of the narrative; 2) prolonged sex episodes, religious promotions, icky melodramatic sentimentality; 3) over-the-top "twists" that don't work with the plot (especially at the end of the book, intended to give us a kick out the door?). This book has them all. I should have returned it, but Patterson was already on my "no more" list, so it was really my own fault for being so impulsive. Enough of that.
