Publisher's summary

On a cold November night, Evelyn Van Pelt steals her roommate’s two underfed and neglected little girls from their beds and drives to the northwestern hometown she fled 14 years earlier - Cormorant Lake. There, hidden in the mountains and woods, dense with fog and the cold of winter, Evelyn grapples with the guilt of what she’s done, and as she attempts to reconcile her wild independence with the responsibilities of parenthood, she reconnects with the two women who raised her - her foster mother, Nan, and her biological mother, Jubilee. But by coming home, she has set in motion a series of events that will revive the decades-old tragedy that haunts Cormorant Lake - and lead her to confront the high cost of protecting her secret.

At once fantastical and deeply rooted in the natural world, Faith Merino’s deeply affecting and spirited debut novel explores the shape of family, the enduring bonds of friendship, and the imperfections of motherhood - messy and beautiful, instinctive and learned, temporal but permanently life-altering.

Thought provoking

This is an excellent book, especially if you like looking into the poetic language and venturing further into the deep symbolism in motherhood, generational trauma, and the duality of being woman. Showing none of the main characters as simple in their motives or one dimensional, everyone had a reason to believe they were the hero in their own storyline, but while fighting their own shadow, and regrets.

Here are my notes
P.35 GOD BLESS AMERICA (audiobook totally said it wrong)
P.53 Bobby’s voice in the audiobook sounds like Ash Ketchum from Pokémon
P.93 there is something very comforting about Jamie’s character being so attracted to the most natural parts of a woman make it seem like he’s not trying to “conquer” her but that he really does have a deep admiration for femininity, BUT IF YOU LIKE JAMIE YOU ARE A DIRTY HETRO BREEDER AND I WILL SHAME YOU
P.143 KARO SYRUP? NO
P.144 it almost hurts to read! In a good way! It does sadly make me want to call my mom and apologize and tell her I love her
P.154 does Versace make maternity dresses? If so that’s awesome
P.192 mmmm beautiful raggedy orphans
