Instant New York Times best-seller and a New York Times critics' pick.

“Thrilling...[told] with gonzo élan.... When the sommelier and blogger Madeline Puckette writes that this book is the Kitchen Confidential of the wine world, she’s not wrong, though Bill Buford’s Heat is probably a shade closer.” (Jennifer Senior, The New York Times)

Professional journalist and amateur drinker Bianca Bosker didn’t know much about wine - until she discovered an alternate universe where taste reigns supreme, a world of elite sommeliers who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of flavor. Astounded by their fervor and seemingly superhuman sensory powers, she set out to uncover what drove their obsession and whether she, too, could become a “cork dork”.

With boundless curiosity, humor, and a healthy dose of skepticism, Bosker takes the listener inside underground tasting groups, exclusive New York City restaurants, California mass-market wine factories, and even a neuroscientist’s fMRI machine as she attempts to answer the most nagging question of all: What’s the big deal about wine?

What she learns will change the way you drink wine - and, perhaps, the way you live - forever.

“Think: Eat, Pray, Love meets Somm.” (TheSkimm)

“As informative as it is, well, intoxicating.” (Fortune)

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Bosker’s journey into this sodden universe is thrilling, and she tells her story with gonzo .... She gives great gossip ... [and] is, in the main, great company as a narrator - witty, generous, democratic ... When the sommelier and blogger Madeline Puckette writes that this book is the Kitchen Confidential of the wine world, she’s not wrong, though Bill Buford’s Heat is probably a shade closer to this book's sensibility and heart.” (Jennifer Senior, The New York Times)

“Reads like a wine lover’s equivalent of Dante’s 'The Divine Comedy’: There is paradise, but only after glimpses of purgatory and hell…A funny, thought-provoking and at times frightening look at the sublime tastes, enormous egos and curious rules of a profession that is both insanely rigorous and occasionally ridiculous.” (Associated Press)

"A madcap 18-month journey...[that's] as informative as it is, well, intoxicating." (Fortune)

An engaging and entertaining book on the world of wine and sommeliers. A great start to learning how to taste and appreciate wine in a much more enjoyable way. Mixes science, passion, fascinating personalities, and humor along a journey to the world of the cork dork and a fuller appreciation of all our senses have to offer.

I really enjoyed the reading of this book, her intonation and expression is great. I am not in the industry, but I am very interested in wine, learning about it, and have been to many wine regions around the world. This was a great way to pick up further info, as well as confirm I definitely have no desire to pursue any level of summelier!

I appreciate that the author pursues various angles on wine. This is not merely a sommelier-wine love affair. She researched scientifically attempting to demystify the lure, step beyond emotionalism and tradition and potential snobbery. The studies she quoted and participated in all add an interesting debate about wine fever.
It helped me to consider for myself What do I really think about wine, the ratings, and all the "shoulds" ?? I love how she wrapped it up for herself, and the reader if one feels similarly, at the end.

Entertaining & Informative

Great Listen

You could argue that a book about a type A personality that takes the time to go from a wine idiot to a sommelier wouldn't appeal to wine enthusiasts. But its written with such verve and love for the subject that it is well worth reading for anyone who loves wine or wants to learn more about it. It gets a little long winded sometimes and she tends to go on tangents sometimes. But overall its a fun read for any wine lover.

Fun book for the wine pro or newbie

Accessible, informative, with great narration. The author takes the reader on a journey of navigating the NYC wine world from bumbling amateur to seasoned & respected professional. Great mix of science, education, and entertaining antidotes.

Great insight into the world of Somm’s

Loved this book whole preparing for my own sommelier exam. It captures great details about the wine industry (especially the sales side) and the various examinations one may have to take. Would recommend to anyone who is interested in wine, though those in the industry will likely find it more interesting then the "civilians" :-)

Loved this book in preparing for my own exam

Bianca Bosker follows the path of a sommelier trainee, and then some, working in the trenches of the wine world and exploring the science behind taste and smell. She joins tasting groups, learns to decant—with a few hiccups—hauls crates of wine through impossibly small passageways in crowded NYC restaurant cellars, makes and studies thousands of flash cards containing wine facts, and attends wine conventions where she learns how wines are manipulated to please customers’ tastes. She explores the world of wealthy wine collectors, attending La Paulee, a wine-sharing “potluck” dinner that pulls out all the stops, and shadows professional sommeliers, learning the intricacies of proper wine service, before taking her certified somm exam.

I am very new to wine, which is why I bought Cork Dork. There was a lot to absorb, and at times the science got a bit thick, but I am grateful to the author for including us in the minute details of her exploration into wines. The vocabulary alone was worth the read, but the fact that she immersed herself into the world of wine going in and knowing little more than I do made it feel as though I was learning along with her. A good read/listen.
