Controlled Access is a psychological conspiracy thriller about a hidden organization that does not need to kidnap people by force—it simply controls the systems meant to protect them.

Mercer operates through schools, courts, hospitals, airports, correctional facilities, private carriers, and government databases. A changed custody order, an altered medical chart, a cloned credential, or a redirected transfer can make an ordinary person disappear while every official involved believes they followed proper procedure.

FBI agent Gary Cook has spent years searching for the truth about his sister Rachel’s disappearance. When former operative Deacon Fulton reveals that Rachel may have been one of Mercer’s victims, Gary joins investigative journalist Elle Jensen, harbor master Jon Rourke, federal agent Miguel Torres, and a scattered network of survivors and unlikely allies.

As Mercer tracks them through digital records, transportation systems, and official channels, the group is forced to abandon technology and disappear through back roads, private airstrips, hidden cabins, and analog communications. But escape is not enough. To expose Mercer, they must turn its greatest weapon against it—creating a doorway the organization cannot resist entering.

Dark, tense, and fast-moving, Controlled Access explores institutional corruption, missing women, surveillance, buried crimes, and the terrifying power of people who decide who is allowed through the door.

it’s an absolute heart-pounding ride that masterfully balances high-stakes suspense with a terrifyingly plausible premise. Kaane weaves a web of digital corruption and institutional control, following Gary Cook and Elle Jensen as they fight to blow the whistle on a hidden network manipulating everything from court orders to medical records. The narrative tension is relentless from the start; every time the protagonists take a breath, the walls feel like they are closing in tighter. Kaane’s ability to turn abstract data and system abuse into a tangible, high-octane threat keeps you constantly guessing who can actually be trusted.

What elevates this audiobook to the next level, however, is Wendy Fournier’s exceptional performance. She delivers a performance packed with urgency, handling the story's fast-paced shifts seamlessly and giving distinct, distinctively voiced depth to both Gary and Elle. Fournier knows exactly when to lean into a tense, hushed whisper to build paranoia and when to pick up the cadence to match the narrative's adrenaline fueled climax. Her emotive delivery keeps you grounded in the characters' personal stakes, making this an utterly immersive listen that you won't want to hit pause on.

Listening to this one felt intense from the start. The idea of Mercer controlling schools, hospitals, courts, and even transportation systems is seriously creepy. I liked Gary’s search for answers about Rachel, and the way he teams up with Elle and the others kept the story moving. The narrator did a good job with the tension and darker moments. Definitely a good listen if you like conspiracy thrillers with plenty of suspense
