Publisher's Summary

With the imagery of a poet and the reflection of a philosopher, David Whyte turns his attention to 52 ordinary words, each its own particular doorway into the underlying currents of human life.

Beginning with "Alone" and closing with "Work", each chapter is a meditation on meaning and context, an invitation to shift and broaden our perspectives on the inevitable vicissitudes of life: pain and joy, honesty and anger, confession and vulnerability, the experience of feeling besieged and the desire to run away from it all. Through this lens, procrastination may be a necessary ripening; hiding an act of freedom; and shyness the appropriate confusion and helplessness that accompanies the first stage of revelation.

Consolations invites listeners into a poetic and thoughtful consideration of words whose meaning and interpretation influence the paths we choose and the way we traverse them throughout our lives.

The magical combination of truth, storytelling and art

It’s hard to describe how beautiful, profound and loving David Whyte’s words are. If his work resonates, you’ll love this. If you don’t know his work yet, starting here is a great way to get to know his way of telling the truth. I loved the format of this book and plan to return to it often. Mr. Whyte’s words work a deep magic in my heart and this book was no exception.

Antithesis to Double Speak in 1984

Refreshing and poetic examination of words we take for granted. David White examines the complexities and relationships of human feeling and states of mind. This book is a perfect response to how social media has stripped language and meaning from our day to day lives. Drop Twitter and read this reminder of what it means to be merely and essential human.

Audible version great, but I need hard copy!

Audible allows the listener to be busy or just still whilst listening. The content covers an enormous breadth of subjects, epochs in our lives, and a host of emotional states. I will need to acquire to hard copy to be able to read, reread, and dwell on many intriguing lines and passages. The book lives up to its name as I felt somewhat consoled at the close of each chapter, and encouraged after several essays. I was very, very impressed with each essay and gave it 5 stars without hesitation.
