Acerca de esta escucha

As a newly commissioned captain of a veteran US Army regiment, MacDonald's first combat experience was war at its most hellish - the Battle of the Bulge.

In this plainspoken but eloquent narrative, we live each minute at MacDonald's side, sharing in all of combat's misery, terror, and drama. How this green commander gains his men's loyalty in the snows of war-torn Europe is one of the most unforgettable war stories of all time.

While Praised For Its Honest And Realistic Portrayal Of Combat, Leadership Challenges, And The Emotional Toll Of War, Some Reviewers Found The Writing Style Dry At Times And The Narration Problematic. Overall, It Offers An Insightful Perspective Into The Realities Of Infantry Warfare And Company-level Command During A Pivotal Campaign.

A good account of company, life in the war

This is one of the best down and dirty accounts of one company commanders experiences slogging through Europe after D-Day. It has all the action, heartbreak and the exhilaration associated with war and the triumph of the human spirit.

Not your normal war book.

This was written from a perspective that you don't normally get. The author isn't afraid to tell about his lack of confidence, and how it affected his actions. It kept me awake during a long cross country trip.

Good story

The story was good, if not a little dry but the editing needs some work. There are places that the reader goes over places twice. Overall I liked the book

Good Book from 1947

It begins a little dry, like a book written by a young proper officer might be, but it picks up, and gathers steam right to the end.

Enjoyable read

I listened to the book 4x before claiming I was finished with it because there are parts of it where the narrator speaks too fast and key information is lost. The storyline itself is well told and the performance is gripping. If you're looking for your next listen and you want an entertaining story that dives into and develops the characters, then this one may work for you. I'll most likely listen to it again in a few weeks just to make sure I got it all.

Great story, poor editing

Someone needs to start listening to these post recording and before release. Numerous rereads made

A Realistic View Of The Meaning Of Combat Leadership

While without question there are many officers and soldiers who rarely if ever experience real combat at the grunt level, there are those few who do and it is their performance under fire that determines the outcome of battle. Certainly there are some who fail in that role, but the author quite accurately describes all of the emotions, including fear for both himself and those under his command. WW2 was probably the last major conflict to be fought against a determined enemy who also possessed the same terrible weapons as us…some even better than ours. The mass unit tactics described in “Company Commander” may not be seen again in the age of weapons of mass destruction, but it’s most often leadership at the field level that determines success or failure. Captain McDonald clearly demonstrates the traits necessary to achieve success at that level even when it often appears that it’s almost impossible to continue on with the mission.

Review of company commander

As a youngster who lived through this time era with many of his relatives there, in that time frame and hearing their stories,I was impressed by the reality of his telling. It’s all most like hearing my relatives and their friends again.
