Publisher's summary

Come West and See is a work both timely and timeless. Set in the Redoubt, an isolated triangle of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming where an armed occupation of a wildlife refuge escalates into a separatist uprising, these stories explore the loneliness, insecurity, and frustration inherent to love and heartbreak. A lakeside wedding drunkenly devolves into a cruel charade; an unemployed carpenter joins a militia after his wife leaves him; and a former soldier raises the daughter of a dead comrade in a bunker beneath an abandoned farm.

Come West and See explores divisions both personal and political, offering startling insights into the wounds of the American people and a powerful new vision of the West.

Wrenching sadness and superb characters

This is a gorgeous book. It's easy to digest and it really puts you directly into the thick of the conflicts with the characters. I personally adored it.

A tough bunch of stories but awesome. Take time between listenings.

I get the negative reviews because of the sex stuff. But people do have sex and people make crazy choices under all kinds of circumstances. Like all story collections you’ll like some more than others. Think of the first story as a litmus test for yourself. It’s not about sex or kink. It’s about loneliness and what that can do to a mind left too much alone. If you get that, you’ll be fine.
I’m moving on to the novel next!!!
I came to appreciate the narrator from a long line of novels he narrated about a Russian detective. Highly recommended!!!! I think he’s awesome. Search out the books if you like John’s style.

Hm

Not my cup of tea, but the writer has a clear talent, especially in building setting/tone
