Perfect narrator for one of the best classics.

Reading David Copperfield is always a great pleasure, but listening to a superb reader makes is doubly so. I have listened to four different people narrate this classic, and Jarvis stands tall as the best. He simply offers an outstanding performance. There's no need to give a synopsis of David Copperield, I just want to encourage Audible members to choose this version since the reader makes it more enjoyable than other performers who have narrted the classic tale. Download it and travel back in time to the Dickensian world.

David Copperfield - Perfection

This audio book is, in my opinion, quite simply the most rewarding listening possible.

David Copperfield is rightly considered a classic. It is a wonderful book that sweeps through a life and has such characters in it as would pitch the listener between pity, anger and farce. I lost count of the times I laughed out loud and on several occasions I was moved almost to tears.

This reading enhances the reputation of classic in almost every way. Superb narration, diction and tempo, consistent and effortless characterizations and a pretty good recording make this audio book the highlight of my Audible association.

Can't recommend this any higher

This was the first audiobook I have ever listened to, and I am so glad I chose this one for my initiation. Martin Jarvis is simply amazing; a truly talented man. I never tired of listening to his voice-- his accent is perfect. He performs all of the voices of the characters (which are numerous) with such skill, it almost felt like I was listening to a whole cast rather than this one amazing actor. The book itself is wonderful. I was never fond of reading Dickens, but hearing it "performed" in this manner has made me a Dickens fan. You won't regret listening to this one.

Absorbing story expertly narrated

I was a real pleasure listening to this book. Martin Jarvis is a master. He is perhaps my favorite narrator of all. His voice is lovely, and he has created a dozen or so unique character voices that he somehow manages to keep straight throughout. Moreover, he moves effortlessly between character and narrator, giving us a seamless listen.

The story itself is so rich in description and detail that I am transported body and soul to Victorian England. The dialog is beautifully written and makes me yearn for the gentility of centuries past.

Highly recommended.

Brilliant Narrator

Martin Jarvis' narration of this book was nothing short of brilliant. He really made the characters come to life and coloured in the story. It was like seeing a black and white film in colour for the first time. I'm working my way through all of Dickens books and am really glad I got this one. I'll certainly be looking forward to hearing more of Jarvis.

This book was not quite as action packed and fraught with evil deeds as some of Dickens' other works, but it's a good tale all the same. It's fascinating to watch as the characters develop and change over time. It's fun, positive and full of characters that seem like old friends by the time you finish. Loved it.

This reading by Mr. Martin Jarvis is astounding!

Never have I enjoyed an audiobook more! Mr. Jarvis' character voices and reading skill, rendered with gusto and great depth, turn what could have been a mere auditory experience into a rich encounter with high drama, humour, pathos and pure fun. In short - BRAVO!

I really enjoyed it!!

This is totally enjoyable even though I have read the book before, listening to the audio was great.
If audible books are like Daved Copperfield (Unabridged), then I will continue to purchase them.

Absolutely magical

I imagine that if Dickens were alive he would be just as enthralled by Martin Jarvis as the Audible audience will be. Jarvis makes every character come alive and brings out Dickens's genius as a storyteller, a judge of character, and a write of great flexibility and skill. Sheer pleasure from beginning to end.

I've read all of Dickens novels, Many more than once, and the best as far as I'm concerned is David Copperfield. So many great characters and so many great twists and turns. It is quite hard to pick a favorite because almost all of his books are so remarkable, and in audible with a top notch narrator they are a uniquely enriching experience!!

There are so many unique characters in Dickens novels and that presents an opportunity to separate those truly gifted narrators from the pack. They produce something so special that youll have no problem calling them great artists. Jarvis does a great job on this one. I highly recommend it. Dickens and audible are made for each other!

My favorite Dickens narration was Little Dorrit narrated by Anton Lesser. I envy you if your just starting to listen to Dickens on audible, you have many treasures in store!!

Fantastic Narration

In this day and age, anyone looking to download Dickens (other than, perhaps, A Christmas Carol) knows what they are getting.

I would, however, like to add my voice to the other reviewers in stating that the narration in this version is truly a cut above. I was particularly struck by the accents -- Jarvis doesn't just effectively create distinct voices for the characters, but takes the extra step of assigning a wide variety of appropriate and effective accents. Really a pleasure to listen to.

The Joy of Audible

The joy of Audible is that you can hear a book read in it's entirety.
The joy of Dickens is that he gives us so many great and memorable characters, Uriah Heep, Mr Macawber, Barkiss, Peggety, Betsie Trotwood and many more in this wonderful book.
The joy of Martin Jarvis is that he brings every Dickens character to life in wonderful clarity.
In this reading of David Copperfield you get a massive 35 hours of every scene of this incomparable and gripping story.
I had to turn off the story from time to time but was always eager to find out what would happen as the drama twists and turns in every chapter.
Thank you Audible for the complete story.

This is a superb audiobook full of humour as well as sadness. It is peopled with wonderful and memorable characters and Martin Jarvis marvellous reading brings them alive.

I was forced to read this book at school when I was obviously far too young and did not 'get' the humour. What a mistake! Only now, after 40 years, was I tempted to try it again. I am now off to get other Dickens audio books!

I highly recommend this book to you . . . it is just made to be read aloud and I can think of no better person than Martin Jarvis to do so.

The Greatest

In a nutshell..The Greatest writer, his Greatest book, read by the Greatest Narrator.
The wealth of characters are astonishing, the strange Miss Dartle, the evil Mr Murdstone, the despicable and slimy Uriah Heep and the hilarious Mr Micawber, are but a few of the dozens of vivid characters in Dickens masterpiece.
They are all brought to life by the narration of the magnificent Martin Jarvis, whose vocal characterisations are nothing short of astonishing.
A must buy for any audio-book fan

Excellent reading

Martin Jarvis is a natural for Dickens. His voice dramatizes the characters superbly and I cannot imagine anyone doing David Copperfield's long list of glittering characters more justice than this particular reader.
My favourite is Aunt Betsey and her cry of 'Donkeys!' which brought tears of laughter to my eyes. Jarvis also makes the unctuous Uriah Heep seem even more sinister and fishy, while managing a different breathy voice for each of the female characters. Astonishingly good. I loved this reading and recommend it thoroughly.

I would definitely not been able to read this so well-english written book.
Incredible, narrator is 10/10, legendary individual who breathes being in a character with their bespoke accepts and class act.
This book is long as I found but since it was always designed to be read in passages, stories, I have taken my time with it for which I am extremely grateful.

A very satisfying tear-inspiring ending too.

True to word, overwhelmed.
Better than expected.

a one-man full-cast performance

This is a wonderful reading of a great novel. It is really like having a full-cast performance; Martin Jarvis manages to provide every character with a distinctive voice. Uriah Heep (whom he played on a television version) is perhaps the most striking - disturbingly creepy. But full marks also to his splendidly booming Micawber and his whining Mrs Gummidge. Perhaps the best thing is how he manages to turn even the most minor of characters - like the asthmatic Mr Omer, for instance - into memorable figures. It's a novel I've always been fond of and this performance has greatly enriched it for me.

This is the best of all the many books I have listened to, due largely to the brilliant voice and dramatic reading skills of Martin Jarvis. I was captivated. This was not a book I had ever thought of reading but I read a review by another listener who said they enjoyed the book due to the amazing talent of the narrator. I wholeheartedly agree. I highly recommend it.
