Publisher's Summary

From the best-selling author of Missoula and Into the Wild: a selection of the singular investigative journalism that made Krakauer famous, covering topics from avalanches on Mt. Everest to a volcano in Washington state; from a wilderness therapy program for teens to an extraordinary cave in New Mexico so unearthly that is used by NASA to better understand Mars.

In these fascinating essays - first published in the pages of The New Yorker, Outside, Smithsonian, and Rolling Stone, among others - Jon Krakauer shows why he is considered one of the finest investigative journalists of our time. The articles, gathered together here for the first time, take us from an otherworldly cave in New Mexico to the heights of Mt. Everest; from the foot of the volcano Mt. Ranier to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska; from the notebook of one Fred Becky, who has catalogued the greatest unclimbed mountaineering routes on the planet, to the last days of legendary surfer Mark Foo. These extraordinary articles are unified by the author's passion for nature and unrelenting search for truth.

Narration doesn't match the content

great written content from krakauer, unfortunately the Narration style doesn't match the matter of fact investigative style of Krakauer, this takes away from that which is written and offers a tone of whispy drama to the completion of sentences that doesn't seem present in the words
I wish it was read by the author like Eiger Dreams was.

A favorite author

These are good stories. As a fan of Jon Krakauer, I regret they didn’t find a few more of his stories to include. I also regret that Mr. Krakauer himself didn’t narrate, as he can do it better than anyone.

Overly dramatic reading style

The articles are fascinating and beautifully written though sometimes grim. The reading style is nauseatingly dramatic and detracts significantly from the experience.

Not narrated by Krakauer.

It would have been a six star read if read by John Krakauer. It’s J.K. what else can be said?!

Krakauer + Scott brick = Great

Great Krakauer articles delivered by a great narrator! Some of the articles were not up to the standard that I have come to expect from the author but the majority were very interesting and well written.

Would be a great intro to Krakauer's work...

Excellent stories he has done over the past several decades. Scott Brick is one of the best narrators on audible.

I'd Read Everything Krakauer Has Ever Written

What did you love best about Classic Krakauer?

The variety of stories he writes about mountain climbing is unparalleled. It's not just "baloney" either............he has been there on those climbs.

What other book might you compare Classic Krakauer to and why?

Krakauer's classic "Into Thin Air" is a lengthy account of horror on Everest.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

Scott Brick enunciates well and speaks very clearly. His tone of words and emphasis rises and falls inappropriately at times.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I loved every single description and story in this book. Krakauer has an incredible way with words that I find utterly captivating.

Any additional comments?

Jon Krakauer---- I sure hope you continue writing. I believe I've now read and/or listened to every one of your books. PLEASE don't stop writing.
