The qualities that saved him then on K2 - in addition to his mountaineering know-how and sheer good luck - drove his 16-year journey to summit all of the world's 8,000ers, the 14 peaks that exceed 8,000 meters (26,000-plus feet) and take climbers into the death zone. Incredibly, he accomplished that feat without the aid of bottled oxygen for every mountain but one.

Impactful telling of a tragedy
The narration is excellent. I have read dozens of mountain climbing misadventures and this retelling of a famous K2 tragedy is thoughtfully done w literary grace. The analysis of people’s motives for climbing is done with a measured hand. One of the best mountaineer books I have read.

Great Read - Well Researched and Eye Opening
if you enjoy books about mountaineering, then you will love this one. many of the facts are already known, if you follow Mountaineering. But this takes a lot deeper and sheds new light on a complicated story and situation. The author does a good job of simply reporting facts versus taking a position. although it's hard not to take a position given some of the behavior on the mountain. Good book, definitely recommend.
