Casey Duncan is a homicide detective with a secret: When she was in college, she killed a man. She was never caught, but he was the grandson of a mobster, and she knows that someday this crime will catch up to her.

Casey's best friend, Diana, is on the run from a violent, abusive ex-husband. When Diana's husband finds her, and Casey herself is attacked shortly after, Casey knows it's time for the two of them to disappear again.

Diana has heard of a town made for people like her, a town that takes in people on the run who want to shed their old lives. You must apply to live in Rockton, and if you're accepted it means walking away entirely from your old life and living off the grid in the wilds of Canada: no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, no computers, very little electricity, and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval.

As a murderer Casey isn't a good candidate, but she has something they want: She's a homicide detective, and Rockton has just had its first real murder. She and Diana are in. However, soon after arriving, Casey realizes that the identity of a murderer isn't the only secret Rockton is hiding - in fact she starts to wonder if she and Diana might be in even more danger in Rockton than they were in their old lives.

An edgy, gripping crime audiobook from best-selling urban fantasy writer Kelley Armstrong, City of the Lost boldly announces a major new player in the crime fiction world.

The story held my interest and was surprising almost to the end. The reader was perfect for the story.

Overall a worthwhile read

This was a really different story about detectives and town folk who are more on the criminal side. I enjoyed every minute of this book.

Bad guy town

I have always loved Kelly Armstrong. This book is unique to her others, yet still mind blowing! Therese is one of the best narrators I have listened to so far.

Amazing!

Excellent base story line, but use of constant “slang” aka-the “f-word” was over used and unnecessary.

Interesting mystery.

The story was interesting but the dialogue is more like teenager like with lots of bad language. Is that supposed to transport the dialogue to adult instead of teenage? It failed if that was the reason. The characters are adults with teenage like interaction, miscommunication, and resulting actions. It didn’t ruin the story but could have been so much better with more mature dialogue and communication between characters. I would rate this book as 3.5.

Decent story

I love this series, have read it a few times and wanted to try the audiobooks. Therese Plummer has quickly become my favourite narrator- highly recommend.

Excellent.

The story is very well done and doesn't go beyond belief, except for one thing. SLIGHT SPOILER: I don't care if an author is a female or male and I rarely pay attention but sometimes in the writing I can tell the gender by the writing. Here is one such book. Many women have an infatuation with bad boys and think they can turn the bad boy into the bad boy with a heart of gold. In real life that doesn't happen and it's about as believable as a client turning a hooker into a loving wife. Not only does the author put it out as plausible in the book but she does it twice. That pulled me out of the story quite a bit but the rest was really good.

I guess if author was writing the book towards a female audience then they get their fantasy of easily bagging a bad boy with the heart of gold, too bad that doesn't really happen.

Only one major issue

You might be thinking that the premise of this book seems a little silly. I thought so too (at first) but somehow, it works. It was an easy listen, the characters were well developed, and it had enough twists to keep me guessing. Also, Therese Plummer is one of my favorite narrators. Get through this one, so you know who everyone is, and the next two books in the series are even better.

Book one of an amazing series

A strong female lead. An imaginative idea. Good mystery. Nice start to a series. I was hooked from the first chapter. I liked Casey. I liked the idea that there is a town out there that could do what Rockton does. I liked Eric even when he was a jerk and I can't wait to get to know the town's people (and the town) even more. The book has atmosphere. I just finished the Nadia Strafford series (recommended! whole series), but this book surpassed it. Hopefully the rest of the series will continue like this.

Overall one of my favorites in a while

Even for those successfully hiding in the most remote parts of northern Canada, change is inevitably necessary. Detective Casie struggles with this but takes the listener along as she works out her life and her investigations.

Canadian Odyssey of deep- discontent
