Publisher's Summary

Kevin Kwan, best-selling author of Crazy Rich Asians, is back with a wickedly funny new novel of social climbing, secret e-mails, art-world scandal, lovesick billionaires and the outrageous story of what happens when Rachel Chu, engaged to marry Asia's most eligible bachelor, discovers her birth father.

On the eve of her wedding to Nicholas Young, heir to one of the greatest fortunes in Asia, Rachel should be over the moon. She has a flawless Asscher-cut diamond from JAR, a wedding dress she loves more than anything found in the salons of Paris, and a fiancé willing to sacrifice his entire inheritance in order to marry her. But Rachel still mourns the fact that her birth father, a man she never knew, won't be able to walk her down the aisle.

Until: a shocking revelation draws Rachel into a world of Shanghai splendor beyond anything she has ever imagined. Here we meet Carlton, a Ferrari-crashing bad boy known for Prince Harry-like antics; Colette, a celebrity girlfriend chased by fevered paparazzi; and the man Rachel has spent her entire life waiting to meet: her father.

Meanwhile, Singapore's It Girl, Astrid Leong, is shocked to discover that there is a downside to having a newly minted tech billionaire husband. A romp through Asia's most exclusive clubs, auction houses and estates, China Rich Girlfriend brings us into the elite circles of Mainland China, introducing a captivating cast of characters and offering an inside glimpse at what it's like to be gloriously, crazily China-rich.

Enjoyable

Though a lot more fluff than Book 1, it was entertaining. I preferred the narrator in Book 2.

Good sequel but performance let it down.

I devoured Crazy Rich Asians in about two days and loved it. The sequel has the same crazy soap opera style plot and is great for an easy listen. My main issue is the change of narrator. Lynn Chen did a great job with the first book but I found Lydia Look’s performance too jarring. Nick sounded American half the time and Rachel’s voice grated on my nerves. It’s slightly put me off listening to the final book, I might just buy the book instead of listening to it.

Story as good as the first - Audio edited poorly.

Kevin Kwan provides a sequel to CRAZY RICH ASIANS which matches in excitement, lavishment and so much spendor you find yourself taking notes!

My only negativity about this Audiobook, and the reason why I didn't give it a 5-Star review, is that the editing of the voice-actor is not up to scratch. The actor provides a faultless performance. However there were many distracting mid-sentence or mid-phrase pauses which obviously made by the voice-actor as tools when reading for an eloquent recording, as is the norm when recording Audiobooks, but the editor/engineer should have removed these prior to publishing to provide a seemless listening experience.

More Style, Less Substance

Is there anything you would change about this book?

More plot!

What could Kevin Kwan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I'm not going to pretend Crazy Rich Asians was something deep and meaningful, but while it was a fun beach read it had some sense of structure and story. China Rich Girlfriend seems to tie off the handful of loose ends from the last book and pad it out with too much label dropping and luxury scene setting.

Could you see China Rich Girlfriend being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Definitely see it being made into a movie. Hopefully it won't be white washed, whoever plays the characters.

Great fun, maybe too many brands

I really enjoyed listening to this book, particularly Lydia Look’s Asian accents, which are pretty spot on. Sometimes the lists of prestigious brands can get a bit tedious, although I get that this is intended. Sometimes the way Lydia has been directed to inflect certain sentences doesn’t always make sense and is a bit irritating e.g. when Ms Look reads ‘“Abc def,” Rachel said,’ the ‘Rachel said’ part is read as if it comes at the beginning of the sentence, not at the end. It’s annoying because you expect someone is going to say something, and then you realise they’ve just said something. That said, hats off for differentiating between all those different Asian accents - that’s quite a skill! Overall very enjoyable and a great story!

A Fantastic Listen !!

Another hilarious book by Kevin Kwan! Lydia Look is so fabulous! She got all the right accents and pronunciations just right. Not an easy feat to read the Hokkien and Cantonese slang words plus all the Singlish terms... Must be a Singaporean. A great way to not be bored while doing housework... Thank you, Amazon! I look forward to listening to the third book.

Great sequel

An excellent continuation to crazy Rich Asians, so many unanswered questions, moves away from Singapore, it's China's time to shine.

Vicariously enjoyed impossible worlds

The lifestyles of the rich and famous came alive with lots of intrigue and often ridiculous skullduggery but a dash of humour and Asian ingenuity made for a great way to pass a couple of days. I loved it ! I enjoyed the follow on from his earlier book , having developed an affection for some of his interesting characters, and even places!
