Acerca de esta escucha
In 1937 the United States still suffered in the Great Depression, as did most of the world. For the US Navy, that meant restricted budgets - and the Asiatic Fleet, on the far side of the world, out of sight of the navy's commanders and the American public, was at the bottom of the list for the navy's limited resources. Bobby MacPherson, seaman second class, only 17 years old and freshly graduated from radio operator school, was naively excited by his assignment to the submarine S-37 stationed with the Asiatic Fleet. The exotic places providing bases for the American Navy - Manila, Shanghai, Tsingtao - and their strange cultures, histories, and people engaged his driving curiosity and sharp mind. His outstanding athletic ability and his earnest integrity made him popular with his crewmates and officers. All of those qualities drew Bobby into a dangerous and malicious plot against the American forces in Asia, a plot involving nearly all of the competing powers in China - General Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists, Mao Tse-tung's Communists, the Imperial Japanese military occupiers of China, warlords, and ancient, powerful families who considered themselves the true rulers of China.

Historia
A convoy of 37 merchant ships is ploughing through icy, submarine-infested North Atlantic seas during the most critical days of World War II, when the German submarines had the upper hand and Allied shipping was suffering heavy losses. In charge is Commander George Krause, an untested veteran of the US Navy. Hounded by a wolf pack of German U-boats, he faces 48 hours of desperate peril trapped the bridge of the ship. Exhausted beyond measure, he must make countless and terrible decisions as he leads his small fighting force against the relentless U-boats.

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Historia
This landmark account of the U.S. Navy in the Cold War, Who Can Hold the Sea combines narrative history with scenes of stirring adventure on—and under—the high seas. In 1945, at the end of World War II, the victorious Navy sends its sailors home and decommissions most of its warships. But this peaceful interlude is short-lived, as Stalin, America’s former ally, makes aggressive moves in Europe and the Far East.

With The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Ship of Ghosts, James D. Hornfischer created essential and enduring narratives about America’s World War II Navy, works of unique immediacy distinguished by rich portraits of ordinary men in extremis and exclusive new information. Now he does the same for the deadliest, most pivotal naval campaign of the Pacific war: Guadalcanal. Neptune’s Inferno is at once the most epic and the most intimate account ever written of the contest for control of the seaways of the Solomon Islands.

Historia
Thousands of miles from friendly ports, the US Navy had finally managed to complete the capture of Guadalcanal from the Japanese in early 1943. Now the Allies sought to keep the offensive momentum won at such a high cost. This is the central plotline running through this page-turning history beginning with the Japanese Operation I-Go and the American ambush of Admiral Yamamoto and continuing on to the Allied invasion of New Georgia, northwest of Guadalcanal in the middle of the Solomon Islands and the location of a major Japanese base.

No espionage missions have been kept more secret than those involving American submarines. Now, Blind Man's Bluff shows for the first time how the navy sent submarines wired with self-destruct charges into the heart of Soviet seas to tap crucial underwater telephone cables. It unveils how the navy's own negligence might have been responsible for the loss of the USS Scorpion, a submarine that disappeared, all hands lost, 30 years ago.

The career of the USS Wahoo in sinking Japanese ships in the farthest reaches of the Empire is legendary in submarine circles. Christened three months after Pearl Harbor, Wahoo was commanded by the astonishing Dudley W. "Mush" Morton, whose originality and daring new techniques led to results unprecedented in naval history; among them, successful "down the throat" barrage against an attacking Japanese destroyer, voracious surface-running gun attacks, and the sinking of a four-ship convoy in one day.

Excessive Gratuitous Sex
A good story distorted and ruined by unnecessary excessive sexual descriptions. The primary content is quite good but the author would have been better served by expanding his descriptions of the political implications and military situations. I will try one more before rendering final judgement.

Period Piece
Seemed more a story of two cultures than a sub story. I enjoyed it although it was not quite what I expected.

Life of a China Sailor
I had an uncle who started his naval career as a China sailor, was a “mustang,” eventually commanding an old 4 stack destroyer and retiring as a Lt. Commander. He use to tell me stories of his days in China much to the chagrin of my aunt since his stories were sometimes a little raunchy and I was only ten. This book reminded me of him and rings true. The “China sailors” were a breed of their own, often looked down upon by society. The story has many interesting characters. It enjoyed listening to it and it was not as dark of story as “The Sand Pebles.”

China Sailor
I thought I had read all of Homewood’s books. But, somehow, I missed this one. Homewood wrote a trilogy called Silent Wars about submarines in WWII plus a number of stand-alone submarine stories.
This book takes place in 1937 and the Navy is still suffering from budget restrictions. Our protagonist is Bobby MacPherson, a seaman 2nd Class just out of radio operator school. Bobby is just seventeen years old and was all excited about being assigned to Submarine S-37 with the Asiatic Fleet. Bobby travels to exotic places but find himself caught up in a plot involving all the key powers in Asia at the time. It is interesting to watch how the spies slowly work to achieve Bobby’s trust before they try to extract information from him. Do they succeed? You will have to read the book to find out.
The book is well written. It is a historical fiction novel but is based on the author’s experiences as a submariner in the 1930s Asiatic Fleet. Therefore, the naval part of the story is very realistic as is the descriptions of the various city ports such as Shanghai. The story is average. But what makes the story is the realistic description of life on a pre-World War Two submarine.
The book is just over nine hours long. Joe Barrett does an excellent job narrating the book. I have listened to Barrett narrate many books over the years and have always enjoyed listening to him. Barrett is a multi-award-winning audiobook narrator.

A good title to listen to in bed
As my headline says, a good book to listen to in bed,
Not the most engrossing story I've ever heard, and I gave up on it about 80% of the way through.
I was expecting something along the line of "The Sand Pebbles" and was bitterly disappointed.
Ah well, back to waiting for the next Lewrie novel to come out.
