Publisher's Summary

Daphne Marriott strolls into Clover Ridge and informs librarian Carrie Singleton that she's a psychic. But if she had foreseen what fate awaited her, Daphne would have steered clear of the quaint Connecticut town. Evelyn, the library ghost, tells Carrie that there's more to Daphne than she lets on.

The mysterious woman grew up in Clover Ridge with her no-good dad, who apparently met his end at the hands of Daphne's brother, Billy. Still, Daphne proves a welcome distraction when Carrie's overbearing mother hits town. Mom's much younger husband, Tom, is in a movie that's lensing locally, and she's there to keep an eye on him: Tom's costar, sultry Ilana Reingold, is also his ex-fiancée, and there's no denying the chemistry is still there. Soon after mingling with the moviemakers at a meet-and-greet, Daphne is found dead.

Carrie and Evelyn investigate, assisted by bushy-tailed library cat Smoky Joe. But the suspect list could overflow the library shelves. Has Billy killed another relative? Is their long-missing mother involved? Is Daphne's mean ex-husband? Carrie's sure she knows who committed the crime, but can she bind together the clues before the culprit Dewey-decimates the town?

Great character development!

This was a great continuation of the story! I enjoy how the characters develop and the background story is woven in with the new mystery.

It's okay.

I do like this series and the characters, not so much the main character. I don't know if it's because she was particularly grating in this book, but Carrie seems to let the smallest thing bother her. I read in another review from a book that the author was overly descriptive whenever there was a scene with food. I have to say, I do agree. I found that there were certain inconsistencies in some areas but let that slide. What did drive me nuts though was Carrie saying "we were on the way to becoming good friends" about another character. This was just very annoying. I doubt I will read more in this series. I know there's another book, but I felt that this one was a good enough conclusion to the series for me.

I did not expect that!

Out of all these books, I was not able to guess who the murderer was. I was not expecting it, very surprised.

Disappointing after the first two

This book in the series was disappointing. Evelyn the ghost and Smoky Joe the cat are the best parts of the series yet barely appear in this novel at all. When Evelyn comes on the scene, her character seems disconnected from the storyline and other characters in a way that she didn’t in the previous installments. Smoky Joe is practically forgotten—just thrown in at the beginning and at the end (thank goodness he’s a cat and not a dog). Library business doesn’t play much of a role here either, another part of the charm of the first two books. Finally, the character of Dylan is awful—he is so controlling in this book, always trying to control what Carrie does and doesn’t do under the guise of trying to “protect” her while he is out and about in the world doing exactly has he pleases. He is a very antiquated incarnation of a love interest. Gross. I will not be listening to further books in the series.
