Publisher's summary

The New York Times bestseller.

The inspiration for the feature film The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

What if everything we’ve been told about addiction is wrong? One of Johann Hari’s earliest memories is of trying to wake up one of his relatives and not being able to. As he grew older, he realised there was addiction in his family. Confused, he set out on a three-year, thirty-thousand mile journey to discover what really causes addiction – and how to solve it.

Told through a series of gripping human stories, this audiobook was the basis of a TED talk and animation that have been viewed more than twenty million times. It has transformed the global debate about addiction.

I am so happy this was renarrated

I was first recommended Johanns third book and I worked backwards, I was so utterly disappointed to find he didn't initially narrate this one as it adds such personal genuine depth to his other books, plus I love the sound of his voice and accent. I literally would Google about it every month or so to see if it was ever going to happen, so imagine my shock and delight.

The story was really fascinating for me as I've always been in the camp he talks about where I have never liked drugs, I will always disapprove of them, I even only ever use alcohol for baking and cooking, but my main concern is the effect on developing young people or things like dui hurting others. I don't actually care what my 50 year old neighbor does after work to his own body.
There was so much in here I'd either never considered or was completely oblivious to, and the way it's presented is both thought provoking and interesting, a very easy and enjoyable listen.
