Publisher's Summary

Falling in love can come with the most unexpected risks in this First Wives novel from New York Times bestselling author Catherine Bybee.

Avery Grant doesn’t date. Her first marriage was a mutually beneficial contract that gave her the financial freedom she needed to step away from her controlling parents. Wealthy and single, the last thing she’s looking for is love sneaking in to mess up her life plans. And after a brutal attack, she’s determined to never be vulnerable again, even if the new man in her life helps her feel safe.

Mesmerized from the moment he sets his eyes on Avery, Liam is driven to learn everything about this tough, sexy, challenging woman. Breaking down her defenses won’t be easy, but Liam refuses to be pushed away. All he needs is a tiny crack in Avery’s armor to wiggle his way into her heart.

But when a terrifying lie about her attacker’s fate comes to light, Avery’s past returns to haunt her. Now she’s willing to put herself in danger to get the answers she needs. That means jeopardizing the best thing that’s ever happened to her: Liam.

LOVE IT!!!

Well, 1st I'll like to say I have another favorite author to add to my list; Catherine Bybee, YEA!!!
Kindle Unlimited is offering FREE read and listen on her "First Wives Series" 4 books currently, so I figure I would check it out and fell in love with all 4 books.
The narrator was AWESOME and she was the same one 4 all the books.
There's new storylines in each one, with mystery, suspense + humor; here n' there.
I definitely recommend all 4 books and I'm looking forward to more of her books. Ω

Thriller, Mystery and Romance in One Book

Chasing Shadows is the third book in the First Wives Series. It can be read as a stand-alone book but I do recommend books 1 & 2 about some of Avery's best friends and some backstory about her attacker.

Avery was a client of Alliance. After her recent divorce from her arranged marriage, she wants to use her new wealth and freedom from her controlling parents to shop, enjoy one night stands and have fun. This plan works great until one day she is grabbed from behind and severely beaten and kicked. Now hospitalized with no memory of her attacker, her life has taken a major turn.

After reconstructive surgery and a lot of healing, Avery's new goal is to defend herself from an attacker she doesn't even remember. The police think they know her attacker from some video footage and he is dead. She doesn't recall anything looking at his photo. She takes some krav maga classes to be able to defend herself. She meets Liam and she won't date him. He starts being her attacker in her private krav maga classes to help her with her anxiety. Liam also learns krav maga in a group class setting. They share some after workout meals and then begin dating.

When Avery starts to get memories back over two years later, what will she do and how will it change things with Liam?

Good but a racial joke tarnished it

This is Avery’a story. For most of the book every really pissed me off she was being selfish and childish and I understand she wanted revenge but to shut Liam out the way she did was almost unforgivable. Liam was a really good guy and definitely understanding he would have to be that kind of person that Avery ends up with because he had to forgive a lot of her stupid shit.

I understand the forgiveness at the end. What else could she do yes she almost died but what good would come from ripping him apart for something he didn’t even remember doing. He wasn’t the same man and she wasn’t the same woman so she had to move on and I’m glad she did.

I didn’t quite understand why Sheldon was a part of this story. Unless he is going to be a part of the future stories it doesn’t really make any sense for him to be a part of this one, he didn’t seem to serve any purpose.

The story lost serious points for me when the author decided to put in a racial joke. Avery‘s mother thinking she was dating a black man and being horrified by it that was not funny, not in any way shape or form and completely unnecessary. she could’ve just been charmed by Liam and left it as that without bringing any racial elements to it.

The narrator did a great job at creating distinctive voices male and female and is truly doing a good job for this series.

Oh and I love Sasha. She seems smarter than all of the women put together and I love the fact that she’s working with the security team. I can’t wait to listen to her story.

Laughs and Deep Thoughts!

I have enjoyed reading/listening to this series. The ladies have formed a psychological bond, everyone have their issues but no one is neglected or left to feel their plight isn't important. I have read three of five in this series. The leading lady in each has come to face their weaknesses and find a strength they hadn't realized they had had been there along, just needed someone to love them through it! The leading men are phenomenal, gentle and pushy at the same time. I laughed a lot. I even had to do sone internal searching. Can't wait to get into the next book! Great reads you want be disappointed!!

Another First Wives masterpiece by Catherine Bybee

Poor Avery but what a find in the lovely Liam.

Avery has been chasing her shadows or ghosts since her attack but so far her memory has failed her. Now, with her memory returning, she starts to remember bits and pieces about her attacker and is determined to seek revenge.

With Avery's confidence in tatters, she joins a Krav Maga class in the hope that she will never be a helpless victim again. Despite her training, she is unable to fight one-on-one with a man in the fear that it will trigger flashbacks. That is until her path crosses Liam's.

When Liam sees Avery almost flooring the unwanted attractions of a man in a bar he is determined to find out who this mystery woman is. Tracking her to her Krav Maga class, under the pretence of doing work for the owner, Brenda, Liam unexpectedly finds himself actively participating in Avery's class and her "target" for the night. Knowing she does not fear Liam and goaded by Brenda, the Krav Maga class instructor, Avery agrees to spar with Liam and before long, the duo are having drinks and dinner together after each session.

Liam falls fast and hard for Avery but with Avery's past, she finds it difficult to accept Liam into her life. Liam is determined to show Avery that she can have a relationship and fall in love but when he finds out about her attack he knows he must tread gently with her feelings and emotions.

Avery is once again supported through her troubles by her loyal friends and "First Wives". Also in the mix, much to my delight is Sasha. There's something about that woman that fascinates me.

As expected, the Audible narration is spot on with these characters. I don't know how Emma Wilder manages to pull off so many seemingly flawless foreign accents.

Catherine Bybee has managed to write so many amazing stories to date and I can't wait to read on. I fear, however, that I have almost cleared her back catalogue and the dreaded reading slump may await me!

Avery’s story continues

Not as sexually charged as previous books, but a fabulous next step in the lives of the group of friends.
