"The First of May" tells the story of chimney sweeps in London who used to dance as they worked, but now Dickens bemoans that tradition has "decayed". Jason's performance tackles standard-issue Dickens romanticism and nostalgia for childhood and lost customs. His voice is refined and articulate, quite easy on the ears. Overall, the piece provides food for thought mixed with decadent Victorian language.
