Publisher's summary

Kaleb Reigns just wants to live a normal life. So much in fact that he swore an Oath to never use any of his gifts again. An Oath to leave the supernatural world behind, to walk away and never interfere again. Kaleb’s best friend is missing, and someone is messing with his dreams. He has been warned by the witches not to get involved, but Kaleb has to make a choice.

Some Oaths are meant to be broken.

Good idea, so-so execution

The first half of the book is interesting enough to overlook some confusing dialogue and plot holes. I was getting pretty excited about a new series, but then the villain dialogue turns awful and the ending is very unsatisfying. It’s confusing about which characters to care about because they are all pretty garbage. Lastly the MC continually goes against his better judgement and gets screwed. Gets old

The performer is ok. His voice range and cadence were hard to sit through at normal speed.

A Compelling Urban Fantasy Tale

Oath Broken is an overall strong debut novel from Jarryd Smith. There are times when wording can be clunky, but it is never enough that it pulls you out of the story. When I first got a hold of Oath Broken I went through it in a day, and was surprised by how much depth I missed on that first listen. Lines that I thought were throwaways clearly indicate secrets about our protagonist. I don't want to give any spoilers, but I will say that Flynn and Anubis are easily my two favorite characters despite their relative lack of narrative time. I also want to acknowledge Dave the zombie, the true tragedy of this series. Regarding the performance, The narrator clearly put effort into his characters, making them feel real. I think overall he made strong choices although there were short sections where it felt less like story and more like nonfiction narration, but those moments were short, few, and far between. The sound quality was relatively good, and I didn't hear anything that ever pulled me out of the action. Overall Chaos Reigns: Oath Broken is a great story with a great performance!

Can't wait for the next book!

I'll be honest, the book felt rough at first but as I continued to listen I could feel myself being sucked in. By the end of the story I was invested, it fills you with questions like who is Flynn and how does he stand next to the keepers? Who actually are the keepers and how do they play into Kaleb's story? What the heck is going on between Alex and James? I have so many questions I cant wait to find out the answer to. Jarryd Smith clearly catches his stride and his writing prowess improves with every page! I loved all the characters (except maybe Kathleen) and they were all portrayed very well. I look forward to the next book and will listen as soon as its released! I am excited to see where the series goes!
