Publisher's Summary

Tahoma - the Native tribal name for Mt. Rainier - wakes up after a devastating 9.0 earthquake shatters the Pacific Northwest. Entire counties are covered in mud, rock, and earth. Landslides and tsunamis add to the annihilation. Power and internet are knocked out to the entire American West. Hundreds of thousands die on the first day of the New World.

Slaughter County shooting-range manager Phil Walker knows things will never be the same. The former Marine is no stranger to tragedy, having lost his wife to cancer and his leg to a firefight. Phil establishes a secure camp for his family and friends. Meanwhile, Phil’s son, Crane, and Captain Marie Darnell fight to stop a disaster at a nearby shipyard. The catastrophe has unleashed a nuclear nightmare inside a submarine and threatened to sink an aircraft carrier permanently. Is it too late, as the worst of humanity surfaces in a rapidly deteriorating world? Will the American Spirit be enough as Phil and his community reel from new and dangerous threats?

Actually pretty good...

Not an action pact testosterone driven fast moving kinda story, but a well measured steady paced story that unfolds gradually. This story is chocked full of information and how to ideas wrapped within a natural disaster scenario. It’s not boring in the least but reads as relatable realistic events.
So it’s not a Zombie Apocalyptic or engineered threat fiction. This clearly lays out a plausible natural disaster and how people in their own ways come to cope or die trying.
I really did enjoy this book. It’s a good first book to this series. I look forward to the next books.

Couldn't listen to it

They say a narrator can make or break a book. The narrator is the worst I have ever heard. The narration is choppy like he's reading a report. It was so quiet I just couldn't hear. The attempt at voices is so bad I physically cringed every time I heard it. This narrator needs to find a different job. I will never try another book with this guy reading.

Enjoyed it except...

Great story, good development, minimal, but unnecessary cursing. F-Bombs were totally unnecessary and offensive. Those who can control their language will most likely control their anger and rage. Our nation and society would not be in the trouble it's in if folks had more self discipline. Why can't literature, even about a catastrophe, promote such things by example rather than normalising behaviors which would only make such situations worse?

Really enjoyed this first book by Austin Chambers

For starters, I listened to this book in the Audible format.

It took a few chapters to warm up to the narrator, but by the end of the book everything was rolling along just fine. He did a really good job of separating "narration" from spoken words and with different character voices. At first he just sounded like he was "reading," as opposed to telling a story.

I don't know if this will be true for people who "read" the book, as opposed to listening to it on Audible, but through the entire audiobook, it was very hard to follow storyline transitions. When the story changed from one to another it was confusing and I had a hard time following which storyline we were on. Honestly, I can't say what the problem is, I just know that I had to rewind several times because I was confused as to which storyline we were in and rewinding helped me to figure out where we had moved on to.

Just a general note, I wish that authors and publishers would realize that swear words detract from books and DOES NOT make them better or more realistic in anyway. There is not a lot of cussing going on in this book, but it would be a major improvement if there were none to begin with.

With this being said, the story, different story lines and characters were well written. The book was very interesting to listen to and I look forward to the next book in the series being released.

Btown countdown

the only thing hard to believe is that it was the shipwrights who came up with the containment idea.

Meh.

It's not "bad", per-say... I think it's well researched and realistic. I like how the author works in some useful knowledge without it feeling forced or contrived. He doesn't just drop product names to try to seem credible. The problem is, the story is just so boring. There are no laughs, no suspense, nothing to make me want to keep listening. I'm over halfway through and I don't even know the characters names. Sorry, but i'm throwing in the towel.

Great story; unfortunately all too plausible

Loved the story! I’ve worked in the shipyard for over 32 years and Austin tied it in beautifully and created great characters. Very well done. He brings the story alive! You don’t have to be prepper-minded to appreciate this story!

Fabulous PA Book

Really enjoyed the characters and the story line in this book. It was different to the standard PA, with lots of action and lots of sub stories to really get to know the characters. Great listen
