Feels closer to fanfic than original story
This story is fun, I’ll give it that. I was so excited to see Jaron return. I grew up on this series. I loved following Jaron’s story. Hell, I even made freaking fan art for this series (the only fan art I’ve ever made). So I was disappointed to listen to this book and hear all the retconning, the flimsy plot, and unrealistic characters. “Jaron is the pirate king” isn’t a valid motivation for the pirates following Jaron’s nonsensical orders when he’s shown multiple times he doesn’t really care what happens to them. Strick’s motivations for being interested in Jaron don’t hold up under scrutiny. The plot twist was predictable. Jaron doesn’t feel clever here, it feels like he’s throwing darts blindly, hoping something sticks. All of that being said, it’s still Jaron. It’s still enjoyable for what it is. I definitely don’t think it holds up with the original series, but it was still fun to revisit this world.
On another note, Charlie McWade, as always, gives an amazing performance in this. I always enjoy hearing his accents. There aren’t many audiobooks where the narrator is able to distinguish who is talking simply by the way they talk. I do think some of Jaron’s humor is lost in his delivery, and I think a deadpan delivery for some of his lines reads much funnier, but I chock that up to a difference of opinion.
